LARGE-CAPACITY ELECTRIC STORAGE

Vulcan 315L Electric Storage Hot Water System

The Vulcan 315L Electric Water Heater is a large mains-pressure electric storage system designed for medium-to-large households that need more stored hot water than a typical 250L cylinder without stepping up to a 400L system.

The current standard single-element range is available as 661315G7 with a 3.6kW heating element and 661315G8 with a 4.8kW heating element. Both provide 315 litres of manufacturer-listed hot-water delivery and use left-hand water and relief-valve connections.

Vulcan currently lists the 315L for up to nine people under its stated sizing assumptions. Actual household suitability still depends on shower duration, fixture flow rates, baths, climate, electricity availability and the timing of daily hot-water demand.

Installed Today can offer the Vulcan 315L as supply only or through eligible supplied-and-installed pathways in Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas, subject to product availability, access, plumbing, drainage, electrical supply and installation requirements.

Vulcan 315L at a glance: 315L hot-water delivery, single element, 3.6kW or 4.8kW model options, indoor or outdoor installation, off-peak electricity suitability, Rp 3/4 water connections, 89kg empty weight and extended cylinder warranty coverage to 10 years for qualifying single-family domestic installations.
CURRENT MODELS

Which Standard Vulcan 315L Models Are Current?

661315G7

Standard 315L single-element electric storage model fitted with a 3.6kW heating element.

661315G8

Standard 315L single-element electric storage model fitted with a 4.8kW heating element.

These are the standard Vulcan 315L electric-storage products. They should not be confused with the separate 662315 twin-element range or the separate Vulcan Duomax product family.

HOUSEHOLD SIZING

How Many People Does the Vulcan 315L Suit?

Vulcan currently lists a maximum guide of nine people for the standard 315L model under its stated household-sizing assumptions.

The manufacturer references shower duration, mixed-water temperature, climate and electricity-supply assumptions when presenting its sizing guidance, so the occupant number should not be treated as a universal guarantee.

Medium to Large Families

The 315L storage volume can provide substantial reserve capacity for homes where several people use hot water during morning or evening peaks.

Higher Daily Demand

Longer showers, baths and multiple occupants can make the additional storage over a 250L cylinder useful.

Like-for-Like Replacement

The model is particularly relevant where an existing 315L electric storage heater is already installed in a suitable location.

Actual sizing should reflect the household's real water-use pattern and the amount of time available each day for the cylinder to reheat.

SINGLE ELEMENT

Is the Standard Vulcan 315L Single Element?

Yes. Both standard 661315 models use one heating element positioned near the base of the storage cylinder.

The G7 variant uses a 3.6kW element and the G8 uses a 4.8kW element.

The element size affects electrical load and recovery rate, so the existing electrical circuit needs to be suitable for the exact replacement model selected.

A physically like-for-like cylinder does not automatically mean the electrical installation is like-for-like. Changing from a 3.6kW heater to a 4.8kW heater can require electrical assessment or alteration.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION

How Is the Vulcan 315L Connected to Power?

Vulcan specifies direct connection to a 220–240V AC, 50Hz mains electrical supply.

The water heater is permanently wired rather than connected as a portable plug-in appliance.

The final circuit, cable, isolation and protective-device arrangement needs to suit the selected 3.6kW or 4.8kW heater and the existing electrical installation.

Where a replacement requires fixed-wiring alteration, circuit extension, load changes or switchboard work, that electrical work is separate from a standard plumbing replacement.

The cylinder must be completely filled with water before it is energised. Vulcan specifically requires the water heater to be filled and checked before electrical power is switched on.
OFF-PEAK ELECTRICITY

Can the Vulcan 315L Run on Off-Peak Power?

Yes. Vulcan lists the standard 315L as suitable for off-peak electricity.

A single-element model can be connected to an off-peak, extended off-peak, time-controlled or continuous electricity supply where the tariff and heating window suit the household.

With a restricted heating window, enough stored water needs to be heated during the available supply period to cover demand until the next heating period.

Check third-party solar-control compatibility before modifying the electrical arrangement. Vulcan's current warranty terms state that a warranty claim may be rejected where a third-party solar diverter is connected to the water heater.
INDOOR OR OUTDOOR

Can the Vulcan 315L Be Installed Inside or Outside?

Yes. The current Vulcan 315L is suitable for indoor or outdoor installation where the location satisfies the manufacturer requirements.

The cylinder must stand vertically upright on a stable supporting surface and remain accessible for plumbing, electrical work, servicing and future replacement.

Indoor locations require particular attention to drainage and protection against property damage if a future leak occurs.

SAFE TRAY

When Does the Vulcan 315L Need a Safe Tray?

Vulcan specifies a safe tray where leakage from the water heater could cause damage to the property.

The tray needs its own suitable drain arrangement and should be planned before installation rather than added after the cylinder has been positioned.

This is especially relevant for indoor laundries, cupboards, internal plant areas and other locations where leaking water could damage floors, walls or surrounding finishes.

Relief-valve drain lines do not simply terminate into the safe tray. The relief-valve and tray drainage arrangements have separate installation requirements.
BASE & SUPPORT

What Support Does a 315L Cylinder Need?

The water heater needs to stand vertically on a stable base capable of supporting its complete operating weight.

The appliance weighs approximately 89kg empty before the stored water is added.

The surrounding location should remain stable, reasonably level and suitable for long-term access to valves, electrical connections and service components.

Where an existing base is being reused, its condition and size should be checked before the new cylinder is installed.

ACCESS & HANDLING

How Large Is the Vulcan 315L?

The standard 315L measures approximately 1640mm high x 640mm wide x 680mm deep.

Although smaller than the 400L Vulcan, it remains a substantial 89kg appliance before filling.

  • Check side gates and passage width
  • Check stairs and significant steps
  • Check steep driveways or uneven ground
  • Check doorways and cupboard openings
  • Check trolley access to the final position
  • Allow future servicing access
  • Confirm the old cylinder can also be safely removed
Difficult access can change the installation scope. Stairs, restricted passages, lifting and routes through internal areas can require additional handling labour.
LEFT-HAND CONNECTIONS

Where Are the Plumbing Connections?

Vulcan identifies the standard 661315 as a left-hand connection water heater.

The hot-water connection, cold-water inlet and TPR-valve arrangement need to be considered when comparing the new cylinder with the existing installation.

For like-for-like replacement, existing pipework that already aligns with a compatible left-hand unit can reduce the amount of plumbing alteration required.

If the existing heater has different connection positions, additional pipework may be necessary.

WATER PRESSURE

What Water Pressure Limits Apply?

The current Vulcan installation guide specifies a 1000kPa temperature and pressure relief valve for the 315L.

Where an expansion control valve is fitted, Vulcan specifies an 850kPa ECV.

Cold-Water Arrangement Maximum Mains Supply Pressure
With Expansion Control Valve 680kPa
Without Expansion Control Valve 800kPa

Where incoming pressure exceeds the applicable limit, a suitable pressure-limiting arrangement is required.

Vulcan also states that supply pressure should be greater than approximately 350kPa to achieve true mains-pressure operation.

EXPANSION CONTROL

Does Every Vulcan 315L Need an Expansion Control Valve?

No. The Vulcan manual does not state that an ECV is universal to every installation.

An expansion control valve is required in particular installation circumstances and water conditions.

Where fitted, the ECV has a lower pressure setting than the TPR valve and normally provides the first discharge point for water expansion during the heating cycle.

The licensed plumber confirms the appropriate valve arrangement for the actual property.

RELIEF DRAINAGE

Where Does Relief-Valve Water Go?

The TPR valve and any installed expansion control valve require suitable drain lines.

Vulcan requires relief drains to remain open to atmosphere and to maintain a continuous downward fall toward an appropriate termination point.

Discharge needs to be visible and arranged so it does not create injury, property damage or nuisance.

If existing drainage cannot be reused for the replacement installation, additional drainage work can be required.

WATER TEMPERATURE

How Hot Does the Vulcan 315L Store Water?

The standard thermostat is adjustable from approximately 60°C to 70°C.

Vulcan's current manual lists a factory thermostat setting of approximately 70°C for the applicable single-element range.

Stored water at these temperatures can cause serious scalding, so the completed plumbing installation needs the appropriate temperature-control arrangement for fixtures where delivery-temperature limitation applies.

VITREOUS ENAMEL CYLINDER

How Is the Vulcan 315L Tank Protected?

The water heater stores water inside a vitreous-enamel-lined steel cylinder.

The enamel lining works together with sacrificial anode protection to protect the steel storage vessel.

Water chemistry affects anode selection and service life. Vulcan's detailed warranty guidance therefore includes water-quality and anode requirements that need to be followed for cylinder warranty coverage.

MAINTENANCE

What Maintenance Does Vulcan Recommend?

Vulcan recommends minor maintenance every six months and a major professional service every five years.

Every Six Months

Vulcan recommends gently operating the TPR-valve easing lever, operating the ECV lever where one is fitted and checking safe-tray drainage where applicable.

Every Five Years

The major service includes replacing the TPR valve, inspecting the ECV where fitted, inspecting the anode, checking the heating unit and inspecting the complete water heater and connections.

The fifth-year major service can matter to warranty coverage. Vulcan states that a warranty claim may be rejected where the service was not arranged and the resulting fault would have been identified and corrected during that service.
WARRANTY

Vulcan 315L Warranty

Vulcan's current detailed warranty for the 661 Series 250–400L electric water heaters provides:

Period Component Coverage
Year 1 All components Repair or replacement of the faulty component, including labour, subject to warranty terms
Years 2–10 Cylinder in a single-family domestic dwelling Replacement cylinder supplied; installation and repair labour is the owner's responsibility
Years 2–3 Cylinder where not installed in a single-family domestic dwelling Replacement cylinder supplied; installation and repair labour is the owner's responsibility

The product page therefore promotes a 10-year cylinder warranty, while the detailed terms explain the difference between parts and labour coverage during the extended period.

The 10-year cylinder warranty does not mean 10 years of installation labour. For qualifying single-family domestic installations, extended years 2–10 provide the replacement cylinder while the owner is responsible for installation and repair labour.
STANDARD VS TWIN ELEMENT

Is This the Twin-Element Vulcan 315L?

No. This page is for the standard 661315 single-element range.

Model Family Element Arrangement Purpose
661315 Single element Standard 315L electric-storage configuration
662315 Twin element Separate model with a lower heating element and upper booster element

The current Vulcan manual lists approximately 50L boost capacity for the separate 315L twin-element configuration.

If your property currently has a twin-element system, check the required replacement and electrical arrangement rather than automatically substituting the standard single-element model.

STANDARD VULCAN VS DUOMAX

Is This the Vulcan Duomax 315L?

No. This product is part of the standard Vulcan 661 Series.

Vulcan maintains separate documentation for its standard electric-storage and Duomax ranges.

If replacing an existing water heater, confirm the model code, element arrangement and connection layout rather than ordering solely on the 315L capacity.

315L VS 250L

When Does a 315L Make More Sense Than a 250L?

The 315L provides more stored hot water than a 250L cylinder and can be useful where a household has stronger daily demand or frequently exhausts a smaller system.

The trade-off is a larger physical cylinder and more stored water to reheat after heavy use.

A 250L system can remain the more appropriate choice where household demand is lower and the additional 315L capacity is unnecessary.

315L VS 400L

When Does a 315L Make More Sense Than a 400L?

The 315L offers substantial storage while requiring less physical space and carrying less water than the 400L Vulcan.

A 400L system can make sense where demand is exceptionally high, while a 315L can be more appropriate where a family needs large storage without the additional footprint and operating volume of the 400L.

Tank size should follow actual demand. Choosing a larger cylinder than the household needs can increase standing storage and reheating requirements without providing a practical benefit.
ELECTRIC STORAGE VS HEAT PUMP

How Does the Vulcan 315L Compare With a Heat Pump?

The Vulcan uses a resistive electric heating element to heat the stored water.

An air-source heat pump uses a refrigeration cycle to transfer ambient heat into the storage cylinder and can use less electrical energy under suitable operating conditions.

The Vulcan can provide a straightforward replacement where the property is already configured for a large electric storage cylinder.

A heat-pump conversion introduces different considerations including airflow, condensate drainage, compressor sound, installation clearances and potentially different electrical requirements.

Tempering Valve and Element Information

*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.

If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.

Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.

Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.

1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.

This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.

Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.

**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.

A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.

If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.

If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.

Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
