NSW currently has more than one hot-water incentive pathway: federal STCs, the statewide Energy Savings Scheme and a larger temporary heat-pump discount in selected postcodes.

How Much Is the NSW Heat Pump Hot Water Discount?
The standard Energy Savings Scheme publishes indicative amounts for common heat-pump replacement pathways, but the final discount is calculated and offered through the participating provider.
Up to $640 Indicative ESS Discount
The NSW Government currently lists an indicative discount of up to $640 when an eligible electric water heater is replaced with an eligible heat-pump water heater.
Up to $330 Indicative ESS Discount
The current indicative ESS figure is up to $330 when replacing an eligible gas water heater with an eligible heat-pump water heater.
The Final Amount Can Differ
Installer choice, location, model, building design, transport, compliance, administration and installation complexity can change both the discount and the total customer price.
Selected NSW Postcodes Can Access a Larger Temporary Heat Pump Discount
A separate Safeguard Acceleration Program is currently offering larger heat-pump water-heater discounts to home owners in selected NSW postcodes. The offer is scheduled to run until June 2027 or until funding is exhausted.
Home Owners Only
The higher selected-postcode offer is currently framed for home owners installing or replacing a hot-water system in an eligible NSW postcode.
Contracted Provider Required
You must use an accredited business contracted with the NSW Government's Safeguard Acceleration Program for the higher discount pathway.
30 June 2027 Deadline
The installation must be completed by 30 June 2027, and the offer can close earlier if allocated funding is exhausted.
Which NSW Postcodes Are in the Higher Heat Pump Discount Area?
The NSW Government currently lists the following postcodes for the higher temporary heat-pump water-heater offer. Exact property eligibility and installer availability still need to be confirmed with a contracted provider.
Hunter & Newcastle Areas
Many of the listed postcodes sit across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, the Hunter and surrounding regions.
Central Coast / Nearby Regions
Selected Central Coast and neighbouring postcodes are included, but not every NSW postcode is part of the higher offer.
Illawarra / Wollongong Areas
A group of Wollongong and Illawarra postcodes is also included. Use the exact postcode rather than assuming the whole region qualifies.
Federal STCs Can Sit Alongside NSW Hot Water Incentives
The federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme is separate from the NSW Energy Savings Scheme. Eligible air-source heat pumps and solar water heaters can create STCs when the exact model and completed installation meet the federal rules.
Eligible Air-Source Heat Pumps
Only eligible models on the Clean Energy Regulator register can create STCs. The federal rules also include system-capacity and installation requirements.
Eligible Solar Water Heaters
Solar hot-water systems can also create STCs when the registered collector, tank and system configuration match the approved listing and installation requirements.
STCs Are Not a Fixed Cash Rebate
Most customers assign the right to create STCs to a registered agent in return for an upfront discount. Certificate values and claim arrangements can change.

Federal certificate eligibility depends on the exact registered solar water-heater system and the completed installation, not simply the word “solar” in the product description.
Supply Only vs Supplied & Installed in NSW
A product being eligible does not mean a supply-only purchase automatically receives the NSW Energy Savings Scheme discount. The claim pathway needs to be arranged before installation.
Arrange the ACP / Installer Pathway First
If you buy supply only, confirm that your licensed installer is already offering the NSW incentive or can partner with an Accredited Certificate Provider before the job proceeds.
