AquaMAX 160L Squat Electric Hot Water System – 9W1160G4 & 9W1160G5
The AquaMAX 160L Squat Electric Hot Water System combines 160 litres of hot-water delivery with a shorter, wider cylinder designed for installations where vertical space is restricted.
The current range includes the 9W1160G4 with a 1.8kW element and 9W1160G5 with a 2.4kW element. Both are single-element mains-pressure storage water heaters with dual-handed hot and cold connections and suitability for indoor or outdoor installation.
Installed Today offers the AquaMAX 160L Squat as a supply-only water heater or with supply and installation across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas.
About the AquaMAX 160L Squat Electric Water Heater
The AquaMAX 160L Squat forms part of the manufacturer's vitreous-enamel electric storage range. Its key difference from a conventional tall 160L cylinder is its shorter, wider format.
AquaMAX specifically promotes the 160L Squat for spaces with height restrictions and describes it as bringing larger-capacity hot water to awkward installation areas.
The cylinder stores electrically heated water ready for use and operates as a conventional mains-pressure electric storage water heater.
Designed for Low-Clearance Installation Spaces
At approximately 965mm high, the AquaMAX 160L Squat is considerably shorter than many standard upright storage cylinders.
Limited Vertical Space
The squat format can suit selected installations beneath structures or in areas where a conventional tall cylinder will not fit.
Awkward Replacement Sites
AquaMAX specifically identifies awkward indoor spaces and height-restricted installations as use cases for the 160L Squat.
Wider Footprint
The lower height is achieved with a wider 640mm × 680mm footprint, so width, depth and service access still need to be checked carefully.
Who Is the AquaMAX 160L Squat Best For?
Small to Medium Families
AquaMAX positions the 160L Squat for small to medium-sized families, subject to household water-use patterns and electricity tariff.
Low-Height Replacement Locations
It can suit replacement jobs where available floor area is reasonable but the installation has insufficient height for a conventional tall cylinder.
Indoor or Outdoor Installations
AquaMAX lists the 9W1160 models as suitable for either indoor or outdoor installation when all site and compliance requirements are met.
How Many People Is the AquaMAX 160L Squat Suitable For?
AquaMAX publishes a maximum guide of up to 5 people for the 160L Squat.
The current manufacturer product page contains two different tariff descriptions for that five-person guide: the feature summary refers to seven-minute showers at 42°C mixed-water temperature in a moderate climate on a time-of-use tariff, while the specification table labels the five-person figure as based on connection to a continuous tariff.
For that reason, the five-person figure should be treated as a manufacturer sizing guide rather than a guarantee for every household or tariff.
Actual suitability depends on shower duration, fixture flow rates, baths, appliance use, climate and how frequently electricity is available to reheat the cylinder.
AquaMAX 160L Squat Key Details
*All components receive Year 1 parts-and-labour coverage under AquaMAX's current warranty. For a qualifying single-family domestic dwelling, the cylinder receives replacement-cylinder coverage from Years 2–10, with installation and repair labour after Year 1 being the owner's responsibility.

The 965mm height is the defining feature of the squat design and can solve selected installation-height restrictions.
Vitreous Enamel Cylinder
The steel storage cylinder is internally lined with vitreous enamel as part of its corrosion-protection system.
Sacrificial Anode Protection
A replaceable sacrificial anode provides additional cylinder protection and must be matched to the property's water chemistry.
Dual-Handed Plumbing
The hot and cold water connections can be made from either side of the cylinder to provide installation flexibility.
Mains-Pressure Operation
The AquaMAX 160L Squat is designed for direct connection to the mains water supply as a mains-pressure storage water heater.

The squat cylinder saves height but requires a comparatively broad footprint. Allow additional room for pipework, valves, electrical access and future servicing rather than relying only on the tank dimensions.
Left or Right-Hand Hot & Cold Connections
The AquaMAX 160L Squat uses dual-handed hot and cold water connections, allowing compatible pipework to connect from either side of the cylinder.
AquaMAX supplies plugs for the unused hot and cold connections.
The TPR-valve fitting is on the left-hand side only, so the dual-handed description applies to the hot and cold connections rather than the relief-valve connection.
Can the AquaMAX 160L Squat Be Installed Indoors or Outdoors?
Yes. AquaMAX specifies the 9W1160 models for indoor or outdoor installation.
The water heater must be installed upright on a suitable supporting surface and positioned so valves, the electrical cover, thermostat and sacrificial anode remain serviceable.
Where leakage could cause property damage, AquaMAX requires installation in a compliant safe tray with suitable drainage.
AquaMAX 160L Squat Water Pressure Requirements
AquaMAX specifies a 1000 kPa temperature-pressure relief valve for the 160L Squat.
Where an expansion-control valve is fitted, AquaMAX specifies an 850 kPa ECV and a maximum mains supply pressure of 680 kPa.
Without an ECV, the maximum published mains pressure is 800 kPa. Where incoming pressure exceeds the applicable limit, an approved pressure-limiting valve is required.
AquaMAX also states that supply pressure should be greater than approximately 350 kPa for true mains-pressure operation.
Continuous, Extended Off-Peak or Off-Peak Power
AquaMAX states that a single-element electric water heater can be connected to off-peak, extended off-peak or continuous electricity, depending on system size and household requirements.
On a controlled or off-peak supply, heating only occurs during the electricity provider's available heating periods. The stored hot water therefore needs to cover demand between those periods.
A continuous supply permits reheating throughout the day. The correct tariff arrangement should be confirmed before relying on the manufacturer's maximum household guide.
AquaMAX 160L Squat Electrical Installation
The AquaMAX 160L Squat must be directly connected to a 220–240V AC, 50Hz mains power supply.
The electrical circuit must suit the selected 1.8kW or 2.4kW element and include the required isolation in accordance with the applicable Wiring Rules.
AquaMAX's current installation guide requires all permanent electrical wiring to be completed by a qualified person.
Stored Water Temperature
The AquaMAX thermostat is tradesperson adjustable between approximately 60°C and 70°C and is factory set to approximately 70°C.
Stored water at these temperatures can cause severe scalding. Suitable temperature-limiting equipment may therefore be required for bathrooms and other personal-hygiene fixtures.
Thermostat adjustments must be completed by a licensed electrical worker with the electrical supply safely isolated.
What Is Required to Install the AquaMAX 160L Squat?
AquaMAX states that the water heater must be installed and serviced by a qualified person in accordance with its current installation instructions and applicable plumbing and electrical requirements.
- Suitable level and stable supporting surface
- Enough floor area for the 640mm × 680mm footprint
- Compatible Rp 3/4 hot and cold water pipework

Vitreous Enamel & Sacrificial Anode Protection
The AquaMAX 160L Squat uses a vitreous-enamel-lined steel storage cylinder together with a sacrificial anode.
The anode gradually deteriorates while helping protect the cylinder. AquaMAX uses different colour-coded anodes according to the water supply's Total Dissolved Solids level.
The current AquaMAX warranty specifies that the cylinder warranty applies where the water has a TDS level below 2500 mg/L and the correct colour-coded anode is fitted for the water supply.
Water Quality Matters
AquaMAX's current Owner's Guide uses colour-coded sacrificial anodes according to water chemistry.
The standard anode should not automatically be assumed suitable for every bore, tank, softened, desalinated or high-mineral water supply.
AquaMAX specifically warns that using the incorrect anode can shorten cylinder life and affect warranty coverage. Unusual water supplies should therefore be assessed before installation.
AquaMAX 160L Squat Maintenance
Every 6 Months
AquaMAX recommends gently operating the temperature-pressure relief-valve easing lever and the expansion-control-valve easing lever where fitted, and checking any safe-tray drain for blockage.
Major Service Every 5 Years
AquaMAX recommends a major service by qualified personnel every five years, including replacement of the TPR valve, inspection of the ECV and sacrificial anode, heating-unit checks and inspection of connections.
For certain variable, softened, desalinated or mixed water supplies, AquaMAX specifies more frequent anode inspection. The correct schedule should follow the current Owner's Guide and actual water conditions.
AquaMAX 160L Squat Warranty
The advertised 10-year cylinder warranty should not be interpreted as 10 years of complete parts-and-labour coverage.
| Coverage | AquaMAX Warranty |
|---|---|
| All Components – All Installations | Year 1 – repair or replacement of the faulty component including labour |
| Cylinder – Qualifying Single-Family Domestic Dwelling | Years 2–10 – replacement cylinder supplied free of charge |
| Installation & Repair Labour – Years 2–10 | Owner's responsibility |
AquaMAX's warranty also requires correct sizing, installation, maintenance, water quality and anode selection. The current warranty permits a claim to be rejected where the recommended fifth-year major service was not arranged and the relevant fault would have been detected and rectified during that service.

Tempering Valve and Element Information
*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.
If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.
Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.
Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.
1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.
This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.
Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.
**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
