LPG CONTINUOUS FLOW WITHOUT MAINS POWER

Bosch HydroPower 16H External LPG Continuous Flow Hot Water System

The Bosch HydroPower 16H External LPG is a mechanical continuous-flow gas water heater designed for outdoor properties using LP gas.

The current LPG model is TF400-8GLP, Bosch part number 7716483601. It provides up to 16 litres per minute at a 25°C temperature rise under Bosch's stated operating conditions.

Its defining feature is HydroPower ignition. Water flowing through the appliance drives a small hydrogenerator that produces the low-voltage electricity required for ignition, so the unit does not need a standard 240V power point or ignition batteries.

Installed Today can offer the Bosch 16H LPG as supply only or through eligible supplied-and-installed pathways across selected Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas, subject to the existing LPG supply, water pressure, external location, pipe sizing and installation access being suitable.

Bosch HydroPower 16H LPG at a glance: external LP-gas continuous flow, 16L/min at a 25°C rise, 5.0-star gas rating, HydroPower ignition, no mains electricity required, 130MJ/hour maximum gas input, 2.75kPa operating LPG supply pressure, 15mm LPG gas connection, 800kPa maximum inlet-water pressure and a 10-year domestic heat-exchanger parts warranty.
CURRENT MODEL

What Is the Bosch HydroPower 16H LPG?

The 16H is the largest model in Bosch's current external mechanical HydroPower family, which also includes 10L and 13L versions.

It heats water only when there is a hot-water demand. Opening a suitable outlet starts water flow through the hydrogenerator, which creates the electrical energy for ignition. A temporary pilot lights the main burner and then extinguishes once the main burner is operating.

When water flow stops, the burner shuts down.

This makes the 16H particularly relevant to compatible LPG properties where a continuous-flow water heater is wanted without adding a mains electrical connection at the appliance.

MODEL IDENTIFICATION

What Is the Bosch 16H LPG Model Number?

Model

TF400-8GLP is the current Bosch model designation for the external 16H HydroPower LP-gas appliance.

Part Number

7716483601 is Bosch's current Australian catalogue part number for the LPG 16H.

The natural-gas 16H is a separately identified appliance. Check the rating plate and property gas type before installation.

FLOW PERFORMANCE

What Does 16L/Min at a 25°C Rise Mean?

Bosch rates the HydroPower 16H at up to 16 litres per minute when it needs to raise the incoming water temperature by 25°C.

Continuous-flow capacity depends on the required temperature rise. If incoming water is colder or a higher outlet temperature is needed, the available flow reduces.

Manufacturer Operating Condition 16H Flow Range
25°C Temperature Rise Approximately 4–16L/min under the installation manual's stated setting
50°C Temperature Rise Approximately 3.2–8L/min under the installation manual's stated setting
The 16L/min headline figure is not a fixed flow at every outlet temperature. A larger temperature rise means less maximum hot-water flow.
WHO IS IT FOR?

Is the Bosch HydroPower 16H LPG Right for Your Home?

Bosch does not publish a fixed occupant rating for the 16H in its current Australian technical catalogue.

Suitability is better determined from required simultaneous hot-water flow, incoming-water temperature, outlet flow rates and how many fixtures are likely to operate together.

Existing LPG Homes

A practical replacement pathway where an existing external LP-gas continuous-flow system is already installed.

No Mains Power at the Heater

Useful where the external gas-water-heater location does not have a power point and the other HydroPower requirements are satisfied.

Regional & Bottled-Gas Properties

Bosch specifically identifies LPG HydroPower models as useful where natural gas is unavailable.

KEY NUMBERS

Bosch HydroPower 16H LPG at a Glance

16L/min At 25°C Rise
5.0 Star Gas Rating
130MJ/h Maximum Gas Input
25kg Appliance Weight
HYDROPOWER IGNITION

How Does HydroPower Ignition Work?

Water entering the appliance passes through a small hydrogenerator.

Flow spins the hydrogenerator turbine, producing enough low-voltage electricity to operate the ignition controls.

The ignition system lights a temporary pilot, the water-operated gas valve allows the main burner to operate and the temporary pilot then extinguishes.

  • No 240V power point required
  • No ignition batteries required
  • No continuously burning standing pilot
  • Ignition electricity generated from water flow
  • Main burner operates only during hot-water demand
MINIMUM WATER FLOW

Does the Bosch 16H Need Minimum Flow to Start?

Yes. The hydrogenerator and mechanical controls rely on sufficient water flow through the appliance.

Bosch's current Australian material lists approximately 3.5L/min minimum flow for the external HydroPower range.

Very restrictive shower heads, blocked tap aerators, inadequate pressure or excessive pipework pressure loss can interfere with reliable activation.

Low-flow fixtures still need to provide enough flow through the appliance. A connected water supply alone does not guarantee reliable burner activation.

Final commissioning should follow the physical appliance, rating plate and applicable Bosch instructions used by the installer.
LPG SUPPLY

What LPG Supply Does the Bosch 16H Need?

The LPG version has a maximum gas consumption of approximately 130MJ/hour.

Bosch's installation manual specifies approximately 2.75kPa LPG supply pressure while the appliance is operating.

The LPG cylinder installation, regulator, gas pipework and any other connected gas appliances all affect whether the required operating pressure and gas flow can be maintained.

A property having LPG bottles does not automatically mean the existing gas line is large enough. Pipe sizing and regulator capacity need to support the 16H's 130MJ/hour maximum input.
LPG CONNECTION

What Size Gas Connection Does the LPG 16H Use?

Bosch's current Australian catalogue lists a 15mm gas connection for the LPG HydroPower models.

This differs from the natural-gas HydroPower models, for which Bosch lists a 20mm gas connection.

Actual gas-pipe sizing through the property is not determined by the appliance connection size alone. Pipe length, gas demand and the complete LPG installation must be assessed by the licensed gas fitter.

LPG VS NATURAL GAS

Can a Natural-Gas Bosch 16H Be Used on LPG?

Bosch supplies separate natural-gas and LPG versions of the HydroPower 16H.

The LPG version is TF400-8GLP, while the natural-gas model uses a separate designation and part number.

Bosch's installation manual states that conversion to another gas type is not the recommended pathway.

Order the factory gas type that matches the property. Natural-gas and LPG versions should not be treated as interchangeable products at checkout.
WATER PRESSURE

What Water Pressure Does the Bosch HydroPower 16H Need?

Bosch lists a 50kPa minimum inlet-water pressure and a maximum static inlet pressure of 800kPa.

Pressure reaching the water heater can be lower than pressure at the property boundary because pipe length, pipe diameter, valves and fixtures all create resistance.

Reliable operation therefore depends on both pressure and adequate water flow at the heater.

HIGH WATER PRESSURE

What If the Water Pressure Exceeds 800kPa?

Bosch specifies a 500kPa pressure-limiting valve where incoming pressure exceeds 800kPa.

The manufacturer states that the preferred location is at the water meter.

Where that pressure-limiting valve is installed less than approximately three metres from the water heater, Bosch also specifies a 700kPa cold-water expansion valve between the water heater and pressure-limiting valve.

The licensed plumber confirms the required pressure-control arrangement for the actual property.

COLD-WATER ISOLATION

What Water Isolation Arrangement Does Bosch Specify?

Bosch instructs installers to fit gas and water isolation valves close to the appliance.

For the cold-water supply, the manufacturer specifies a gate valve or fixed-mechanism full-flow ball valve.

This model-specific requirement needs to be considered when selecting the valve kit rather than assuming every generic continuous-flow valve arrangement is appropriate.

OUTDOOR INSTALLATION ONLY

Can the Bosch HydroPower 16H LPG Be Installed Indoors?

No. The TF400-8G HydroPower range is approved by Bosch for outdoor installation only.

It must not be installed indoors or within an enclosed space.

The wall location also needs unobstructed combustion-air entry and a compliant location for discharge from the top flue terminal.

EXTERNAL LOCATION

What Space Does the Bosch 16H Need?

Bosch requires the appliance to be installed on an appropriate external wall with clear combustion-air openings and suitable service access.

Manufacturer installation guidance includes:

  • Outdoor location only
  • Top and bottom areas kept clear by at least approximately 300mm
  • Approximately 500mm guide clearance below eaves, balconies and similar projections for this gas-input class
  • Air-entry openings kept free of plants, insects and debris
  • Safe access for operation and servicing
  • Side clearances measured from the flue outlet
  • Appliance not mounted over a heat source
  • Base of appliance no more than approximately 2m above ground under Bosch's installation guidance

The installer must still confirm the complete flue-terminal clearances for the actual building geometry and applicable gas-installation requirements.

WALL MOUNTING

How Is the Bosch 16H Installed?

The HydroPower 16H is a wall-mounted appliance with a manufacturer-listed weight of approximately 25kg.

The wall and mounting fixings must be appropriate for the appliance weight and construction material.

If installed on a combustible surface, Bosch requires the applicable heat-shield arrangement to be used in accordance with its installation instructions.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Does the Bosch HydroPower 16H Need Temperature Limiting?

The HydroPower can deliver water above 50°C.

Bosch therefore requires an appropriate temperature-limiting device on pipework feeding sanitary fixtures used primarily for personal hygiene where the installation requires temperature limitation.

A suitable tempering-valve arrangement may be used, with the licensed plumber determining the final configuration for the property.

MECHANICAL CONTROLS

How Is the Hot-Water Temperature Adjusted?

The HydroPower 16H is a mechanical continuous-flow appliance rather than a digitally temperature-set gas heater.

It provides controls that allow gas input and water flow to be adjusted.

Increasing water flow generally lowers the temperature rise, while reducing water flow increases the temperature rise. Gas adjustment also changes burner output.

Seasonal changes in incoming-water temperature can therefore alter the preferred control setting.

NO GPO REQUIRED

Does the LPG HydroPower 16H Need a Power Point?

No standard mains electrical connection is required for normal operation.

The hydrogenerator supplies the low-voltage power needed by the ignition controls.

This can be useful when replacing an older mechanical LPG continuous-flow system at an external location that does not already have a suitable electrical outlet.

FROST CONDITIONS

What If the Property Is in a Frost-Prone Area?

Bosch specifies an Exogel frost-protection valve for applicable external HydroPower installations where atmospheric temperature may briefly reach freezing conditions.

For extended periods of freezing weather or when the appliance will not be used, additional isolation and draining precautions may be required under the Bosch instructions.

APPLICATION LIMITS

When Is the Bosch HydroPower 16H Not the Right Product?

Bosch's current installation material identifies several applications for which the HydroPower is not intended.

  • Indoor or enclosed installation
  • Solar hot-water boosting
  • Pool heating
  • Spa-pool heating
  • Commercial boosting of a warm-water recirculation system
  • Applications with incoming cold water above the manufacturer's permitted range
  • Sites unable to provide the necessary LPG flow or operating pressure
  • Sites unable to maintain sufficient water flow for HydroPower activation
MAINTENANCE

How Often Should the Bosch HydroPower Be Serviced?

Bosch's HydroPower installation manual specifies a service and safety inspection every two years.

The area around the appliance should also remain clear so air entry, flue discharge and servicing are not obstructed.

Leaves, insects, dirt and other debris can interfere with combustion and should not be allowed to block the appliance openings.

FINAL CHECK

Is the Bosch HydroPower 16H LPG Right for Your Property?

The Bosch TF400-8GLP HydroPower 16H is primarily suited to properties wanting an external LPG continuous-flow water heater without dependence on mains electricity.

Its defining manufacturer specifications are 16L/min at a 25°C rise, HydroPower ignition, 5.0-star gas rating, 130MJ/hour maximum LPG consumption, 2.75kPa operating LPG supply pressure, 15mm LPG connection, 50kPa minimum inlet pressure and 800kPa maximum inlet pressure.

Before ordering, check the property gas type, LPG regulator and pipe capacity, water pressure, simultaneous hot-water demand, external flue clearances, temperature-control requirements and valve arrangement.

For supply only, arrange appropriately licensed installation trades. For eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast properties, select the matching supplied-and-installed pathway and any required valve, gas, plumbing, pressure-control, disposal or difficult-access add-ons before checkout.

Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.

A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.

If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.

If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.

Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
