Installed Today offers the Rheem 400L as a supply-only water heater or with supply and installation across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas.

Rheem 400L at a glance: a large Australian-made electric storage water heater with 400L hot-water delivery, single- or twin-element configurations, Rp 3/4 water connections, indoor or outdoor installation suitability, Rheem Ultranamel® cylinder protection and a 12-year cylinder warranty for qualifying single-family domestic installations. Rheem's current 400L specification sheet lists the system for approximately 8–9 people under its stated sizing assumptions.
ABOUT THE SYSTEM

About the Rheem 400L Electric Water Heater

The Rheem 400L forms part of the 491 / 492 Series electric storage range. It is designed as a large-capacity replacement for existing electric storage water heaters and uses a vitreous-enamel-lined steel cylinder protected by Rheem's Ultranamel® coating and sacrificial anode.

Rheem highlights its common footprint and familiar fitting locations as an advantage for compatible replacement installations. Dual-handed inlet and outlet connections also give the installer additional flexibility when matching existing pipework.

The current manufacturer specification lists the 400L range for approximately 8–9 people. Rheem's online product listings show a 9-person rating based on stated assumptions including approximately seven-minute showers, 42°C mixed water temperature, moderate climate conditions and a time-of-use tariff.

TWIN ELEMENT

How Does the Rheem 492400 Twin Element System Work?

The 492400 has two heating units, each with its own thermostat. Rheem states that the elements are wired for non-simultaneous operation, meaning only one heating unit operates at a time.

The lower heating unit provides the normal stored-hot-water heating. The upper heating unit acts as a booster during periods of higher demand and heats the upper portion of the tank.

Rheem publishes a 90L boost capacity for the 400L twin-element model. The lower element is commonly connected to an off-peak or time-controlled supply, while the top element is commonly connected to a continuous supply, subject to electricity-provider and installation requirements.

TARIFF & SIZING

Is the Rheem 400L Right for Your Household?

A 400L electric storage water heater provides a large reserve of stored hot water, but correct sizing still depends on how the household uses water and how the heater is connected electrically.

Rheem's current 400L specification lists approximately 8–9 people. The product page's 9-person calculation is based on specific usage assumptions and should not be treated as a universal guarantee for every household.

Household Demand

Long showers, large baths, multiple bathrooms and high simultaneous use can significantly increase daily hot-water demand.

Electricity Tariff

Off-peak and time-controlled supplies only heat during set periods, so sufficient storage needs to be available for the household's use between heating cycles.

Twin Element Option

The 492400 adds an upper boost section for periods of higher demand, provided the electrical and tariff arrangement is configured correctly.

Allow additional room for pipework, valves, electrical connection and servicing. Rheem recommends sufficient headroom for sacrificial-anode inspection or replacement and requires the water heater to remain safely accessible.

INSTALLATION LOCATION

Can the Rheem 400L Be Installed Indoors or Outdoors?

Yes. Rheem specifies the 491 and 492 Series 400L models for indoor or outdoor installation.

The water heater must stand vertically upright on a stable base at ground or floor level. Rheem states that the base is made from corrosion-resistant material and may be placed directly on a suitable supporting surface.

Where leakage could cause property damage, the water heater must be installed in a compliant safe tray with suitable drainage.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

What Is Required to Install the Rheem 400L?

Rheem states that the water heater must be installed and serviced by a qualified person, with plumbing and electrical work complying with applicable Australian requirements.

  • Suitable stable base at ground or floor level
  • Rp 3/4 compatible hot and cold water plumbing
  • Correct 1000 kPa temperature-pressure relief valve arrangement
  • 850 kPa expansion control valve where required
  • Pressure limiting where supply pressure exceeds the permitted limit
  • Compliant drain lines from relief valves
  • Safe tray and drainage where property damage could result from leakage
  • Suitable delivery-temperature control where required
  • 220–240V AC electrical supply
  • Electrical circuit matched to the selected element configuration
  • Isolation switch at the switchboard
  • Suitable access for future service and anode replacement
  • Compliance with the Plumbing Code of Australia and AS/NZS 3500.4
  • Electrical work compliant with AS/NZS 3000
WATER PRESSURE

Rheem 400L Water Pressure Requirements

Rheem specifies a 1000 kPa temperature-pressure relief valve for the 400L models and an 850 kPa expansion control valve setting where an ECV is fitted.

The maximum mains supply pressure is 680 kPa with an expansion control valve and 800 kPa without an expansion control valve.

Rheem also states that supply pressure should be greater than approximately 350 kPa for true mains-pressure operation to be achieved.

MAINS PRESSURE

Full Mains-Pressure Hot Water

The Rheem 400L is designed to connect directly to the mains water supply and operate as a mains-pressure storage water heater.

This makes it suitable for conventional large-home installations where several outlets may need stored hot water. Actual pressure and flow at each fixture still depend on the property's incoming pressure, valves, pipe sizing and plumbing layout.

LOWER-COST TARIFFS

Can the Rheem 400L Use an Off-Peak or Controlled Tariff?

Yes. Rheem lists the 400L electric range as suitable for connection to lower-cost tariffs where available and appropriate.

With an off-peak supply, heating only occurs during the electricity provider's set hours. The cylinder therefore needs enough stored hot water to cover demand between heating periods.

For twin-element models, Rheem states that the bottom heating unit is commonly connected to an off-peak or time-controlled supply while the upper booster is commonly supplied from a continuous circuit. Electricity-provider arrangements can vary.

CYLINDER PROTECTION

Rheem Ultranamel® & Sacrificial Anode Protection

The 400L cylinder uses Rheem Ultranamel®, a durable vitreous-enamel lining designed to protect the steel cylinder.

A sacrificial anode provides additional corrosion protection. Rheem specifies different anode requirements according to the mineral content and chemistry of the water supply.

Water chemistry matters to cylinder life and warranty coverage. Rheem's current guide publishes specific anode-selection requirements based on Total Dissolved Solids, so unusual water supplies should be assessed before installation.

MAINTENANCE

Rheem 400L Maintenance

Rheem recommends both regular minor maintenance and periodic major servicing.

Every 6 Months

Rheem recommends gently operating the easing lever on the temperature-pressure relief valve and the expansion control valve where fitted, and checking that a safe-tray drain is not blocked.

Major Service Every 6 Years

Rheem recommends a major service by qualified personnel every six years, including replacement of the temperature-pressure relief valve, inspection of the expansion valve, checks of the heating unit and inspection of relevant connections and components.

Rheem states that major servicing and routine replacement of service components such as relief valves and anodes are not included in the standard product warranty.

Tempering Valve and Element Information

*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.

If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.

Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.

Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.

1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.

This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.

Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.

**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.

A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.

If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.

If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.

Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
