RHEEM 111 / 191 SERIES ELECTRIC STORAGE HOT WATER

Rheem 50L Electric Hot Water System – 191050 & 191050P Plug-In

The Rheem 50L Electric Hot Water System is a compact mains-pressure electric storage water heater designed for locations where hot-water demand is relatively low and installation space is limited.

The current range includes the 191050 family with hardwired element options and the 191050P 2.4kW plug-and-lead model. Rheem publishes a rated hot-water delivery of 50 litres, a compact 400mm diameter and an overall height of approximately 695mm.

Installed Today offers the Rheem 50L as a supply-only water heater or with supply and installation across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas.

Rheem 50L at a glance: a compact 50L electric storage water heater for lower-demand applications, with 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW element variants across the range, a 2.4kW plug-and-lead option, dual-handed Rp 3/4 water connections, optional wall mounting with Rheem bracket 299120 and a 7-year cylinder warranty for qualifying single-family domestic installations.
ABOUT THE SYSTEM

About the Rheem 50L Electric Water Heater

The Rheem 50L forms part of the 111 / 191 Series electric storage range. Rheem specifically positions the 50L model for restricted-space installations and lower-demand applications including apartments, kitchens, offices and canteens.

Rheem lists the system for approximately one person under its stated sizing assumptions. Those assumptions include seven-minute showers, 42°C mixed-water temperature, a moderate climate and a time-of-use tariff.

A 50L system should therefore be selected around the actual fixture load and usage pattern rather than household size alone. Frequent showers, higher-flow fixtures or several outlets used close together can exhaust a 50L stored supply relatively quickly.

WHO IT SUITS

Who Is the Rheem 50L Best For?

Low-Demand Applications

Rheem lists the 50L for approximately one person under its stated usage assumptions, making it relevant where total daily hot-water demand remains modest.

Kitchens, Offices & Canteens

Rheem specifically identifies apartments, kitchens, offices and canteens as common applications for its compact 50L electric water heater.

Restricted Spaces

The 400mm diameter and 695mm height make the 50L useful where a larger electric storage cylinder will not fit.

The plug-and-lead 191050P must not be treated as an outdoor model. Rheem's current installation instructions specifically state that models supplied with a power supply cord and plug are suitable for indoor installation only.

IMPORTANT INSTALLATION DETAIL

Can the Rheem 50L Be Installed Outdoors?

Hardwired models can be installed indoors or outdoors when the location complies with Rheem's installation requirements.

The 191050P plug-and-lead model is indoor only. Rheem explicitly excludes power-cord-and-plug models from outdoor installation.

This distinction is important when replacing an existing outdoor 50L unit. An outdoor replacement should use a suitable hardwired configuration rather than assuming the plug-in model can be installed in the same location.

ELEMENT OPTIONS

1.8kW, 2.4kW & 3.6kW Heating Options

Rheem publishes 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW element ratings across the 191050 family.

1.8kW

Lower electrical load with slower reheating compared with the higher-output variants.

2.4kW

Available as a hardwired variant and as the factory plug-and-lead 191050P model.

3.6kW

Provides greater heating power and faster recovery where the property's electrical circuit is suitable.

Confirm the exact electrical variant before ordering. The base 191050 model number is used across multiple element configurations.

Allow additional room for valves, plumbing, drainage, electrical connection and future servicing. Rheem recommends leaving sufficient headroom for sacrificial-anode inspection or replacement where possible.

WALL MOUNTING

Can the Rheem 50L Be Wall Mounted?

Yes. Rheem states that its 025–050 electric water heaters may be wall mounted using the available Rheem wall bracket kit 299120.

The wall must be capable of supporting the filled weight of the water heater, not simply the approximately 24kg empty cylinder.

Wall mounting also needs to preserve access to the temperature-pressure relief valve, front cover, thermostat, heating unit, rating plate and sacrificial anode for future servicing.

INSTALLATION LOCATION

Choosing the Installation Position

Rheem recommends installing the water heater close to the most frequently used hot-water outlet where practical to reduce the amount of water and energy lost while waiting for hot water to reach the fixture.

The system must remain accessible without requiring a ladder or scaffold for routine service. The relief-valve easing lever, front cover, thermostat and heating unit must be accessible.

Where possible, Rheem recommends leaving approximately one water-heater height of headroom so the sacrificial anode can be inspected or replaced without removing the entire unit.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

What Is Required to Install the Rheem 50L?

Rheem states that the water heater must be installed and serviced by a qualified person and in accordance with applicable plumbing and electrical requirements.

  • Suitable floor, base or structurally capable wall mounting point
  • Rp 3/4 compatible hot and cold water plumbing
  • Correct 1400 kPa temperature-pressure relief valve
  • Suitable isolation and non-return valve arrangement
  • 1200 kPa expansion control valve where required
  • Pressure limiting where supply pressure exceeds permitted limits
  • Compliant relief-valve drain line
  • Safe tray and drainage where leakage could cause property damage
  • Suitable delivery-temperature control where required
  • 230–240V AC single-phase electrical supply
  • Electrical circuit matched to the selected element rating
  • Switchboard isolation for hardwired models
  • Indoor compliant power outlet for the 191050P plug-in model
  • Suitable service access
  • Compliance with the Plumbing Code of Australia and AS/NZS 3500.4
  • Electrical work compliant with AS/NZS 3000
WATER PRESSURE

Rheem 50L Water Pressure Requirements

Rheem specifies a 1400 kPa temperature-pressure relief valve for the 50L model.

Where an expansion control valve is installed, Rheem specifies a 1200 kPa ECV and a maximum mains supply pressure of 960 kPa.

Without an ECV, Rheem specifies a maximum mains supply pressure of 1120 kPa. Where the incoming supply can exceed the relevant limit, a suitable pressure-limiting valve must be installed.

Rheem also advises that supply pressure should be greater than approximately 350 kPa for true mains-pressure operation.

DUAL-HANDED PLUMBING

Left or Right-Hand Water Connections

The Rheem 191 Series 50L has left- and right-hand hot, cold and relief-valve connection options.

Rheem supplies a plug kit for the unused side, including brass plugs, protective caps and insulation components.

This dual-handed layout can make a replacement easier where existing pipework approaches the old water heater from a particular side, although site-specific pipe alterations may still be required.

PLUG-IN MODEL

Rheem 191050P Plug & Lead Model

The 191050P is Rheem's 2.4kW plug-and-lead version of the 50L electric water heater.

It provides a factory-fitted power cord and plug for connection to a suitable electrical outlet. This can simplify the electrical connection where a compliant outlet and circuit are already available.

The 191050P is for indoor installation only. Plumbing installation still needs to be completed by a qualified person, and the electrical outlet and circuit must be appropriate for the unit.

HARDWIRED MODELS

Hardwired Rheem 50L Options

Hardwired versions of the 191050 family are available in 1.8kW, 2.4kW and 3.6kW element ratings.

Rheem requires hardwired units to have an isolation switch installed at the switchboard in accordance with applicable Wiring Rules.

Unlike the power-cord-and-plug version, a correctly installed hardwired 50L can be used in a suitable indoor or outdoor location.

HOT WATER TEMPERATURE

Temperature Control & Scald Protection

Rheem's installation guide states that its 045 and 050 models can store and deliver water at temperatures up to approximately 75°C, depending on thermostat setting.

These temperatures can cause severe scalding. Rheem recommends appropriate temperature-limiting control for fixtures primarily used for personal hygiene, such as bathrooms, ensuites and public ablution areas, in accordance with applicable plumbing requirements.

Kitchen and laundry requirements can differ, so the final plumbing arrangement should be determined by the installing tradesperson.

MAINTENANCE

Rheem 50L Maintenance

Rheem recommends regular maintenance to support safe operation and the life of the water heater.

A minor maintenance check every six months includes gently operating the temperature-pressure relief-valve easing lever, operating the expansion-control valve where fitted and checking that any safe-tray drain is not blocked.

Rheem recommends a major service every five years by qualified personnel. This includes replacement of the temperature-pressure relief valve, inspection of the expansion-control valve, inspection and possible replacement of the sacrificial anode, inspection of the electric heating unit and a general condition check.

Rheem states that routine servicing and routine replacement of components such as the anode and relief valves are not included in the standard product warranty.

Tempering Valve and Element Information

*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.

If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.

Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.

Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.

1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.

This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.

Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.

**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.

A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.

If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.

If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.

Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
