Rheem 20L Natural Gas Continuous Flow Hot Water System 50°C – 876A20NF
The Rheem 20L Natural Gas Continuous Flow Hot Water System 50°C is a compact outdoor water heater designed for homes wanting continuous hot water without a storage cylinder.
The 876A20NF is the Natural Gas version of Rheem's 20L 50°C continuous-flow water heater. It provides 20 L/min nominal hot-water capacity at a 25°C temperature rise, a 6 Star energy rating, a 50°C factory preset outlet temperature and nominal gas consumption of 157 MJ/hr.
Installed Today offers the Rheem 20L Natural Gas as a supply-only gas water heater or with supply and installation across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas.
About the Rheem 20L Natural Gas Continuous Flow Water Heater
The Rheem 20L heats water as it passes through the appliance rather than storing a tank of heated water.
When a suitable hot-water outlet is opened, the unit detects demand and operates its electronic ignition, gas burner and combustion controls to heat the water while it is being used.
This compact wall-mounted format can suit homes, townhouses, apartments and replacement installations where an outdoor Natural Gas continuous-flow system is appropriate.
876A20NF Is the Natural Gas Model
This page covers the Rheem 876A20NF Natural Gas model.
Rheem's current technical documentation identifies the lead-free technical designation as 876A20NF-LF. In the manufacturer's model coding, N identifies Natural Gas, F identifies frost protection and -LF identifies the current lead-free certified version.
The Natural Gas and propane models are separately configured appliances and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Who Is the Rheem 20L Natural Gas Best For?
Small to Medium Homes
The 20L model provides more nominal hot-water capacity than Rheem's smaller 12L and 16L continuous-flow models.
Up to Around Two Bathrooms
Rheem's current product page lists the 20L model for approximately two bathrooms. Actual performance depends on climate, fixture flow rates and simultaneous demand.
Natural Gas Replacements
The 876A20NF can suit replacement of an existing outdoor Natural Gas water heater where the gas supply, pipe sizing, plumbing, power and clearances remain suitable.
Rheem 20L Natural Gas Key Details
20 L/min Continuous Flow Performance
The advertised 20L capacity is based on a 25°C water-temperature rise. When the appliance needs to raise the incoming water temperature further, the available heated-water flow decreases.
| Temperature Rise | Rheem 20L Published Capacity |
|---|---|
| 25°C Rise | 20 L/min nominal capacity |
| 40°C Rise | 12.5 L/min water-heating capacity |
Actual fixture performance also depends on incoming water temperature, mains pressure, gas supply, pipe sizing, fixture flow rates and simultaneous hot-water use.
How Many Bathrooms Can the Rheem 20L Supply?
Rheem's current product information lists the 20L model as suitable for approximately 2 bathrooms.
This is a sizing guide rather than a guarantee that two showers or multiple fixtures will always operate simultaneously at unrestricted flow.
Incoming water temperature, shower flow rates, gas supply, water pressure and household demand all affect the available hot-water performance.
Low-Flow Operation
Rheem's current 20L plumbers' information lists a minimum operating flow rate of 1.5 L/min.
The April 2025 installation manual separately uses 2.0 L/min as the minimum operating flow figure during its commissioning check.
Because these figures appear in different manufacturer documents for different contexts, the supplied unit and current installation instructions should be used when diagnosing low-flow operation.
Factory Preset to 50°C
The 876 series is Rheem's 50°C factory preset continuous-flow range.
Rheem states that the 876-series water heater delivers water not exceeding 50°C when installed in accordance with the approved plumbing configurations.
Rheem's 20L plumbers' information describes the 50°C version as requiring no separate tempering valve in the normal configuration.
Some plumbing arrangements can still require additional temperature-control measures. The 876-series 50°C model must not be confused with Rheem's separate 874-series higher-temperature water heater.
Rheem Q Factor™ & FlameSafe® Protection
Rheem Q Factor™
Rheem describes Q Factor™ as technology designed to provide rapid hot water while reducing temperature fluctuations that can occur as continuous-flow demand changes.
FlameSafe® Protection
FlameSafe® overheat protection is designed to shut the water heater down before an overheating condition develops.

Rheem 20L Natural Gas Dimensions
Rheem's technical drawing also shows an overall vertical installation envelope of approximately 585mm once the lower connection area is considered.
*Rheem publishes 16kg on its current plumbers' sheet and 17.5kg unpackaged in the April 2025 Owner's Guide.
The Rheem 20L Natural Gas Is Outdoor Only
Rheem specifies the A20 water heater for outdoor installation only.
The unit must be installed vertically upright with the water, gas and power connections on the underside and must be securely mounted to a suitable wall or support frame.
The installation must also permit safe servicing, removal of the front panel and access to the appliance without relying on a ladder or scaffold.
Rheem 20L Water Pressure Requirements
Rheem specifies a minimum mains water pressure of 120 kPa to achieve the rated flow and performance of the water heater.
The maximum mains supply pressure is 1000 kPa. Where supply pressure can exceed this limit, Rheem requires an approved pressure-limiting valve without non-return characteristics.
The appliance incorporates an internal pressure-relief valve with a manufacturer setting of 1750 kPa.
Rheem does not recommend this model for a low-pressure water supply.
Gas Supply & Pipe Sizing Matter
The Rheem 20L has a nominal maximum gas input of 157 MJ/hr, so the Natural Gas meter, gas line and pipe sizing must be capable of maintaining adequate supply while the appliance is operating.
Rheem's current technical data specifies a minimum Natural Gas supply pressure of 1.13 kPa and a maximum of 3.50 kPa.
During commissioning, Rheem instructs the installer to check inlet gas pressure while the water heater and other gas-burning appliances on the property are operating. Inadequate pressure can indicate an undersized gas line or supply limitation.
Natural Gas Flue Diverter Options
A continuous-flow gas water heater installed beneath a partially or fully covered area must comply with Rheem's installation instructions and applicable gas-installation requirements.
For the A20NF Natural Gas model, Rheem lists specific flue-diverter options that can be used in certain compliant covered-area arrangements.
Flue Terminal Diverter – 299336
Rheem permits the Natural Gas A20NF to use this diverter in specified covered-area configurations when installed in accordance with the accessory and water-heater instructions.
Extended Flue Terminal Diverter – 299334
Rheem also lists an extended diverter for specified installations where its outlet is positioned beyond the relevant covered-area boundary as required.
These accessories do not make every covered location compliant. The licensed gas fitter must assess the site against Rheem's instructions and AS/NZS 5601.1.
The Rheem 20L Natural Gas Also Requires Power
Although Natural Gas supplies the heat, the water heater requires electricity for its electronic controls, ignition, combustion fan and frost-protection functions.
Rheem supplies the appliance with an approximately 1.8 metre power lead and plug for connection to a suitable weatherproof 220–240V AC, 50Hz general-purpose outlet.
The electrical outlet must be positioned safely away from the flue exhaust, draining water, gas connection and water pipework in accordance with the installation instructions.
Optional Rheem Temperature Controllers
Rheem lists compatible remote temperature-controller options for approved single-water-heater installations.
Kitchen Controller
A compatible Rheem kitchen controller can provide user temperature selection from the kitchen.
Bathroom 1 Controller
A compatible bathroom controller can provide temperature selection and priority operation.
Bathroom 2 Controller
A second compatible bathroom controller can be incorporated where the approved installation configuration allows it.
On the 876 series, the maximum outlet-temperature arrangement remains subject to the 50°C model limitations and Rheem's controller instructions.
Rheem 20L Accessory Options
Pipe Cover – 299430
Designed to conceal compatible plumbing and gas connections beneath the water heater.
Recess Box – 299427
Allows the water heater to be recessed into a wall where all manufacturer installation requirements can be met.
Security Cage – 299867
Optional security accessory listed by Rheem for compatible continuous-flow installations.
Wall Mount Security Kit – 299868
Optional wall-mount security hardware listed in Rheem's current 20L plumbers' information.
Rheem 16L vs 20L Continuous Flow
| Feature | Rheem 16L | Rheem 20L |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal Flow @ 25°C Rise | 16 L/min | 20 L/min |
| Water Heating @ 40°C Rise | 10.0 L/min | 12.5 L/min |
| Typical Manufacturer Positioning | Lower household flow demand | Higher household flow demand |
| Nominal Gas Consumption | 126 MJ/hr | 157 MJ/hr |
A larger continuous-flow model requires more gas input as well as providing additional hot-water capacity, so gas-pipe suitability should be checked before increasing system size.
Rheem 20L 50°C vs 60°C
50°C – 876 Series
The 876A20 is factory configured as Rheem's 50°C temperature-limited model for appropriate domestic installations.
Higher Temperature – 874 Series
The separate 874A20 model can deliver hotter water and may require additional temperature-limiting equipment for personal-hygiene fixtures.
Select the required temperature version according to the property's plumbing configuration and compliance requirements rather than treating the models as interchangeable.

Choose supply only where licensed installation is already arranged, or check Installed Today's Brisbane and Gold Coast installation options.
Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
