Rheem 16L LPG at a glance: model 876A16PF, propane gas, 16 L/min at a 25°C rise, 10 L/min at a 40°C rise, 50°C factory preset outlet temperature, 6 Star rating, 126 MJ/hr gas input, outdoor-only installation, 120 kPa minimum water pressure for rated performance, 1000 kPa maximum mains pressure and up to 12 years heat-exchanger coverage for qualifying single-family domestic installations.
ABOUT THE SYSTEM

About the Rheem 16L LPG Continuous Flow Water Heater

The Rheem 16L heats water as it passes through the appliance instead of maintaining a tank of stored hot water.

When a suitable hot-water outlet is opened, the appliance detects demand and operates its electronic ignition, gas burner and combustion controls to heat water while it is being used.

The compact wall-mounted format can suit smaller properties and compatible LPG replacement installations where gas supply, water pressure, electricity and outdoor clearances meet Rheem's requirements.

IMPORTANT GAS TYPE

876A16PF Is the Propane Model

This page covers the Rheem 876A16PF propane model.

Rheem's current technical documentation identifies the current lead-free technical designation as 876A16PF-LF. In Rheem's model coding, P denotes propane, F denotes frost protection and -LF denotes current lead-free certification.

The propane and Natural Gas versions are separately configured appliances and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Confirm the gas type shown on the appliance rating label and the property's LPG supply before installation.

WHO IT SUITS

Who Is the Rheem 16L LPG Best For?

Apartments & Townhouses

The compact continuous-flow format can suit smaller properties where a large storage cylinder is unnecessary.

Around 1.5 Bathrooms

Rheem's current product information places the 16L model at approximately 1.5 bathrooms, subject to climate and actual fixture demand.

Propane Replacements

The 876A16PF can suit replacement of an existing outdoor LPG continuous-flow system where gas supply, plumbing, power and clearances remain suitable.

PRODUCT AT A GLANCE

Rheem 16L LPG Key Details

16 L/min At 25°C Rise
6 Star Energy Rating
126 MJ/hr Gas Input
50°C Factory Preset
FLOW PERFORMANCE

16 L/min Continuous Flow Performance

The advertised 16L rating is measured at a 25°C water-temperature rise.

When the incoming water must be heated through a larger temperature difference, the available flow decreases.

Temperature Rise Rheem 16L Published Capacity
25°C Rise 16 L/min nominal capacity
40°C Rise 10.0 L/min water-heating capacity

Actual hot-water flow at fixtures also depends on incoming water temperature, supply pressure, LPG supply, gas pipe sizing, fixture flow rates and simultaneous demand.

BATHROOM SIZING

How Many Bathrooms Can the Rheem 16L Supply?

Rheem currently lists the 16L model as suitable for approximately 1.5 bathrooms.

This should be treated as a manufacturer sizing guide rather than a guarantee of simultaneous unrestricted shower and fixture flow.

Incoming water temperature, shower flow rates, water pressure, propane supply and household usage all affect actual performance.

MINIMUM OPERATING FLOW

Low-Flow Operation

Rheem's current 16L plumbers' information lists a minimum operating flow rate of 1.5 L/min.

The April 2025 Owner's Guide separately states that the burners will not light below 2.0 L/min and uses 2.0 L/min as the commissioning minimum operating-flow check.

Because Rheem currently publishes these figures in different technical contexts, the current instructions and the actual supplied appliance should be followed when assessing low-flow operation.

50°C MODEL

Factory Preset to 50°C

The 876 series is Rheem's 50°C factory preset continuous-flow range.

Rheem's current installation instructions state that an 876-series water heater delivers water not exceeding 50°C when installed in the approved configuration.

Rheem's 16L plumbers' information identifies the 50°C 876A16 as requiring no separate tempering valve in its normal compliant configuration.

Specific plumbing arrangements can still require additional temperature-control measures. The 876-series 50°C model should not be confused with Rheem's separate 874-series higher-temperature model.

RHEEM TECHNOLOGY

Rheem Q Factor™ & FlameSafe® Protection

Rheem Q Factor™

Rheem describes Q Factor™ as technology designed to provide rapid hot water while reducing temperature fluctuations as continuous-flow demand changes.

FlameSafe® Protection

FlameSafe® overheat protection is designed to shut down the appliance before an overheating condition develops.

OUTDOOR INSTALLATION

The Rheem 16L LPG Is Outdoor Only

Rheem's current installation instructions specify the A16 continuous-flow water heater for outdoor installation only.

The appliance must be installed vertically upright with the gas, water and electrical connections on the underside and securely fixed to a suitable wall or frame.

The unit must remain safely accessible for servicing, with the air inlet and flue terminal kept clear of vegetation and other obstructions.

FLUE CLEARANCES

Outdoor Flue-Terminal Clearance Requirements

The final installation location must comply with Rheem's instructions, AS/NZS 5601.1 and applicable local requirements.

  • At least 300mm from the top of the flue terminal to eaves
  • At least 300mm horizontally from the flue terminal to relevant building openings
  • At least 1500mm vertically from the flue terminal to relevant openings
  • At least 300mm horizontally from a return wall or external corner
  • At least 1500mm to an opening in the direction of flue discharge
  • At least 500mm to a fence, wall or other obstruction in the direction of discharge
  • More than 450mm to an unobstructed property boundary in the direction of discharge
  • Sufficient front clearance to remove the complete front panel for service

These are manufacturer guide extracts only. The licensed gas fitter must assess the actual site against current gas-installation requirements.

COVERED AREAS

Special Propane Requirements for Covered Locations

An outdoor gas continuous-flow water heater installed beneath a partially or fully covered area must satisfy Rheem's requirements and AS/NZS 5601.1 for ventilation and safe dispersion of combustion products.

Rheem specifically states that A16PF propane models are not certified for use with either the Rheem Flue Terminal Diverter or Extended Flue Terminal Diverter.

This means LPG installation beneath eaves, roofed areas, balconies or similar covered locations requires careful site assessment rather than relying on a flue-diverter accessory.

WATER PRESSURE

Rheem 16L Water Pressure Requirements

Rheem specifies a minimum mains water pressure of 120 kPa to achieve the rated flow and performance of the appliance.

The maximum mains water-supply pressure is 1000 kPa.

Where incoming supply pressure can exceed this value, Rheem requires an approved pressure-limiting valve without non-return characteristics.

The appliance incorporates an internal relief valve with a setting of 1750 kPa.

Rheem does not recommend installing this model on a low-pressure water supply.

PROPANE SUPPLY

Gas Supply & Pipe Sizing Matter

The Rheem 16L has a nominal gas input of 126 MJ/hr. The LPG regulator, cylinders or other propane supply arrangement and gas pipework must be capable of supplying the appliance correctly under operating load.

Rheem's current technical data specifies propane supply pressure from approximately 2.75 kPa to 3.50 kPa under the manufacturer's conditions.

Gas pipe sizing must be determined by the licensed gas fitter from the actual pipe length, regulator arrangement, connected gas load and applicable gas-installation requirements.

ELECTRICAL SUPPLY

The Rheem 16L LPG Also Requires Electricity

Although propane provides the heat, the appliance also requires electricity for its electronic controls, ignition, combustion fan and frost-protection system.

Rheem's current installation instructions specify a 220–240V AC, 50Hz electrical supply using the appliance's factory power lead and plug with a suitable weatherproof general-purpose outlet.

The electrical outlet must be positioned clear of the flue exhaust, draining water, gas supply pipe and water connections.

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLERS

Optional Rheem Temperature Controllers

Rheem allows compatible Standard temperature controllers to be fitted to approved single-water-heater installations.

Kitchen Controller

A compatible Rheem kitchen controller can provide convenient user temperature selection.

Bathroom 1 Controller

A compatible Bathroom 1 controller can provide temperature selection and priority control.

Bathroom 2 Controller

A compatible Bathroom 2 controller can be included where the approved controller configuration allows it.

For an 876-series water heater, the maximum available delivery-temperature setting remains 50°C.

Rheem's Standard controllers are intended for single-water-heater installations and are not suitable where multiple continuous-flow units are manifolded together.

ACCESSORIES

Rheem 16L Accessory Options

Pipe Cover – 299430

Rheem lists a compatible silver pipe cover to house suitable pipework beneath the water heater.

Recess Box – 299427

A compatible recess box is available for approved recessed wall installations.

Security Cage – 299867

Rheem lists a security cage as an optional accessory for compatible continuous-flow installations.

Wall Mount Security Kit – 299868

Rheem also lists a compatible wall-mount security kit for the 16L range.

16L VS 20L

Rheem 16L vs 20L Continuous Flow

Feature Rheem 16L Rheem 20L
Nominal Flow @ 25°C Rise 16 L/min 20 L/min
Water Heating @ 40°C Rise 10.0 L/min 12.5 L/min
Rheem Bathroom Guide Approx. 1.5 bathrooms Approx. 2 bathrooms
Nominal Gas Consumption 126 MJ/hr 157 MJ/hr

The 20L offers greater flow capacity but also requires more gas input. Select system size from actual household demand and the property's gas-supply capacity.

50°C VS HIGHER TEMPERATURE

Rheem 16L 50°C vs 60°C

50°C – 876 Series

The 876A16 is Rheem's factory 50°C temperature-limited version for suitable domestic applications.

60°C – 874 Series

The separate 874A16 can deliver higher-temperature water and may require additional temperature-limiting equipment for personal-hygiene outlets.

Choose the temperature version required by the property's plumbing layout and compliance requirements rather than treating the two models as interchangeable.

FINAL CHECK

Is the Rheem 16L LPG 50°C Right for You?

The Rheem 876A16PF is suited to smaller properties wanting a compact outdoor propane continuous-flow water heater with 16 L/min nominal flow at a 25°C rise, a factory 50°C outlet setting and Rheem's 6 Star continuous-flow platform.

Before ordering, confirm that the property uses the correct propane supply, that the LPG regulator and pipework can support the 126 MJ/hr appliance, that mains water pressure is adequate and that a compliant outdoor location with suitable flue clearances and weatherproof power is available. Choose supply only where licensed installation is already arranged, or check Installed Today's Brisbane and Gold Coast installation options.

Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.

A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.

If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.

If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.

Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
