RANGE OF AVAILABLE REPLACEMENT SYSTEMS
Rinnai Hotflo 135L Gas Storage Hot Water System – GHF4135N & GHF4135L
The Rinnai Hotflo 135L Gas Storage Hot Water System is an outdoor mains-pressure storage water heater designed for medium-sized households wanting conventional stored hot water with gas recovery between periods of use.
The current range includes the GHF4135N Natural Gas model and GHF4135L LPG model. Rinnai specifies a 135L storage capacity, 209L first-hour delivery, 4.7 Star energy rating and sizing of up to 5 people in warm climates or 4 people in cool climates.
Installed Today offers the Rinnai Hotflo 135L as a supply-only gas water heater or with supply and installation across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas.
About the Rinnai Hotflo 135L Gas Storage Water Heater
The Hotflo 135L stores heated water in a vitreous-enamel-lined steel cylinder and automatically reheats the tank using its gas burner as the stored-water temperature falls.
Unlike a continuous-flow gas water heater, the Hotflo keeps a reserve of hot water ready for use. This makes it particularly relevant when replacing an existing outdoor gas storage system without changing to instantaneous gas, electric storage or a heat pump.
The 135L is the smaller of Rinnai's current Hotflo gas storage models, with the 170L available where greater storage capacity and first-hour delivery are required.
Who Is the Rinnai Hotflo 135L Best For?
Medium-Sized Households
Rinnai lists the 135L for up to five people in warm climates and up to four people in cool climates, depending on actual usage.
Gas Storage Replacements
The Hotflo 135L is particularly relevant where an existing outdoor gas storage water heater is being replaced and the gas type, pipework and location remain suitable.
Multiple Hot-Water Outlets
Rinnai describes the Hotflo range as providing mains-pressure hot water to multiple taps. Actual outlet flow still depends on the property's plumbing and incoming water pressure.
Rinnai Hotflo 135L Key Details
*Rinnai provides a comprehensive one-year parts-and-labour warranty and, for domestic use as defined by Rinnai, an additional seven-year replacement guarantee if the inner cylinder fails. Transport, installation and labour for a replacement after the first year are the owner's responsibility. Full warranty conditions apply.
Natural Gas or LPG
GHF4135N – Natural Gas
The GHF4135N is configured for Natural Gas. Rinnai publishes an hourly gas-consumption figure of 17 MJ/hr.
GHF4135L – LPG
The GHF4135L is configured for LPG. Rinnai also publishes an hourly LPG-consumption figure of 17 MJ/hr for the 135L model.
Confirm the property's gas type before ordering. Natural Gas and LPG appliances are separately configured and the correct model must be installed and commissioned by an authorised person.
How Many People Does the Rinnai Hotflo 135L Suit?
Warm Climate
Rinnai lists the Hotflo 135L for up to 5 people in warm-climate conditions.
Cool Climate
Rinnai lists the Hotflo 135L for up to 4 people in cool-climate conditions.
Rinnai's sizing guidance assumes efficient outlets. Actual suitability depends on shower length, fixture flow rates, baths, kitchen use, laundry demand and how closely hot-water use occurs together.
209L First-Hour Delivery
Rinnai publishes a 209 litre first-hour delivery for the Hotflo 135L under its stated test condition of a 45°C temperature rise from a 15°C cold-water supply.
First-hour delivery combines available stored hot water with water reheated by the gas burner during the first hour of draw-off.
Rinnai also publishes an approximate 74 L/hr recovery rate at a 45°C temperature rise for the 135L model.
Key Features of the Rinnai Hotflo 135L
4.7 Star Gas Storage
Rinnai currently rates the Hotflo 135L at 4.7 Stars for gas-storage energy performance.
Vitreous Enamel Cylinder
The steel storage cylinder uses a vitreous-enamel lining to help protect its internal surface from stored-water conditions.
Sacrificial Anode Protection
An internal sacrificial anode forms part of the cylinder's corrosion-protection system and is replaceable during scheduled servicing.
Mains-Pressure Hot Water
Rinnai designs the Hotflo range to provide mains-pressure hot water to multiple connected outlets.
Thermostatic Safety Control
The gas control is thermostatically operated and incorporates automatic safety temperature shut-off protection.
Lead-Free Compliance
Rinnai's current installation manual states that the Hotflo gas storage range complies with the lead-free requirements of the National Construction Code Volume 3.

Allow additional room for valves, gas pipework, flue clearances and servicing. Rinnai also requires approximately 50% of the water-heater height above the unit for sacrificial-anode replacement.
The Rinnai Hotflo 135L Is External Use Only
The Hotflo 135L must be installed outdoors. It is not designed as an indoor gas-storage water heater.
Rinnai requires the appliance to be installed on a permanently level, stable and clean-draining surface suitable for the water heater. Rinnai recommends a plinth where the heater is exposed to wet conditions.
Flue-terminal clearances from windows, doors and other building openings must comply with Rinnai's installation instructions and AS/NZS 5601.
Allow Space Above the Hotflo 135L
The sacrificial anode is accessed through the top of the water heater.
Rinnai specifies allowing approximately 50% of the water-heater height above the unit so the anode can be removed and replaced.
For the 1579mm-high 135L system, this means substantial overhead clearance should be considered before installing the unit below eaves, shelves or other permanent obstructions.
Gas Supply & Connection Requirements
The water heater must be connected to the correct gas type shown on its data label and installed by an authorised person.
Rinnai specifies gas-pipe sizing and installation in accordance with AS/NZS 5601. Pipework must be free of foreign material and purged before the water heater is commissioned.
LPG installations use an external gas regulator in addition to the appliance gas controller and require the LPG commissioning procedure specified by Rinnai.
The GHF4135N Natural Gas and GHF4135L LPG models should not be treated as interchangeable products. Select the gas type that matches the property before ordering.
Rinnai Hotflo 135L Water Pressure Requirements
Rinnai specifies a maximum direct water-supply pressure of 800 kPa without an expansion-control valve.
Where an 850 kPa expansion-control valve is fitted, the published maximum supply pressure is 680 kPa.
Rinnai recommends a 500 kPa pressure-limiting valve where pressure control is required. The final valve arrangement must comply with the manufacturer's instructions and applicable plumbing requirements.
1000 kPa Pressure & Temperature Relief Valve
Rinnai supplies a 1000 kPa PTR valve for the Hotflo gas-storage range.
The valve must be installed directly into the designated relief-valve socket and connected to its own compliant drain line with continuous fall toward the discharge point.
The water heater must not be operated without the PTR valve correctly installed and in working order.
Mains-Pressure Hot Water to Multiple Outlets
Rinnai describes the Hotflo gas-storage range as providing mains-pressure hot water to multiple taps.
The 135L storage capacity together with gas recovery can support normal household demand across showers, kitchens and laundries, subject to correct sizing.
Actual pressure and flow at each fixture also depend on the property's incoming water pressure, control valves, pipe sizing and plumbing layout.
Thermostatic Temperature & Scald Protection
The Hotflo gas-storage water heater uses thermostatic gas control together with safety temperature shut-off.
Rinnai's current operating instructions recommend a gas-control setting of approximately 5, which produces stored-water temperatures in the region of 60°C to 65°C.
Because stored water at these temperatures can cause severe scalding, suitable delivery-temperature control is required for relevant personal-hygiene outlets in accordance with applicable plumbing requirements.
Sacrificial Anodes & Water Quality
The Hotflo uses a magnesium-based sacrificial anode as standard to help protect the vitreous-enamel-lined steel cylinder.
Rinnai specifies the standard magnesium anode for Total Dissolved Solids up to and including 600 mg/L.
Where TDS exceeds 600 mg/L but does not exceed 2500 mg/L, Rinnai specifies an aluminium-based replacement anode. The manufacturer's warranty does not apply where TDS exceeds 2500 mg/L or other published water-quality limits are exceeded.
Rinnai Hotflo 135L vs 170L
| Feature | Hotflo 135L | Hotflo 170L |
|---|---|---|
| Storage Capacity | 135L | 170L |
| First-Hour Delivery | 209L | 257L |
| Recovery @ 45°C Rise | 74 L/hr | 87 L/hr |
| Warm-Climate Guide | Up to 5 people | Up to 6 people |
| Cool-Climate Guide | Up to 4 people | Up to 5 people |
| Energy Rating | 4.7 Star | 4 Star |
| Overall Height | 1579mm | 1915mm |
| Empty Weight | 68kg | 83kg |
The larger 170L may suit households requiring more stored hot water and higher first-hour delivery. Household size alone should not be the only sizing factor.
