Rinnai Hotflo 400L Electric Hot Water System – EHFA400
The Rinnai Hotflo 400L Electric Hot Water System is the largest model in Rinnai's current Hotflo electric storage range and is designed for large households requiring substantial stored hot-water capacity at mains pressure.
Although commonly described as a 400L system, Rinnai currently specifies the EHFA400 with a 420 litre rated storage capacity and 400 litre hot-water delivery. The range is available in single- and twin-element configurations with 3.6kW and 4.8kW heating options.
Installed Today offers the Rinnai Hotflo 400L as a supply-only water heater or with supply and installation across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas.
About the Rinnai Hotflo 400L Electric Water Heater
The Hotflo 400L is a mains-pressure vitreous-enamel electric storage water heater. Water is stored in a steel cylinder, heated electrically and kept ready for use until a hot-water outlet is opened.
Rinnai positions the 400L as its highest-capacity Hotflo electric storage model. It can suit large family homes, shared households and other residential properties where a 250L or 315L electric storage unit may not provide enough stored hot water.
The system includes thermostatic temperature control, over-temperature protection, a supplied pressure and temperature relief valve, dual-handed plumbing connections and sacrificial-anode protection for the cylinder.
Who Is the Rinnai Hotflo 400L Best For?
Large Households
Rinnai lists the 400L model for larger households, with its published sizing guide reaching eight or more people depending on climate and tariff.
Large Electric Storage Replacements
Standard sizing and dual-handed plumbing connections can make the EHFA400 practical when replacing another large electric storage water heater.
High Daily Hot-Water Demand
The 400L delivery rating can suit properties where showers, laundry and kitchen hot-water demand regularly occur within the same usage periods.
Rinnai Hotflo 400L Key Details
*Rinnai's current product page advertises a 10-year cylinder warranty. The warranty booklet linked by Rinnai specifies 10 years cylinder-parts coverage and 3 years cylinder labour for qualifying domestic use of 80L–400L Hotflo electric systems, subject to the applicable model and full warranty terms.
Rinnai Hotflo 400L Household Sizing Guide
Rinnai publishes separate household guides according to climate and electricity tariff. These figures are guides rather than guaranteed household capacities because actual demand depends on shower duration, flow rates, baths, appliance use and household habits.
| Operating Scenario | Rinnai Published Guide |
|---|---|
| Peak Period – Warm Climate | 8–9 people |
| Peak Period – Cool Climate | 8+ people |
| Off-Peak – Warm Climate | 8+ people |
| Off-Peak – Cool Climate | 6+ people |
Correct sizing should consider actual daily hot-water consumption and the number of hours electricity is available to reheat the cylinder.
Single-Element vs Twin-Element Hotflo 400L
Single Element
A single thermostatically controlled heating element is located toward the base of the cylinder and heats the stored water. Rinnai states that a single-element system can be connected to continuous or off-peak electricity depending on sizing and usage.
Twin Element
The twin-element configuration adds an upper booster element. Rinnai specifies non-simultaneous operation, so only one element operates at a time. The upper element heats the top portion of the tank during high-demand periods.
How Much Water Does the Twin-Element Boost Heat?
Rinnai's current Hotflo Operation & Installation Manual lists an 81 litre boost capacity for the 400L twin-element configuration.
The lower heating element heats the full tank, while the upper element provides faster access to a smaller volume of hot water during periods of increased demand.
The correct electrical and tariff configuration should be confirmed before ordering a twin-element system. Rinnai states that twin-element models require a continuous electricity supply to the upper heating element.
Key Features of the Rinnai Hotflo 400L
Vitreous Enamel Lining
The steel storage cylinder uses a vitreous-enamel lining designed to resist corrosion and wear inside the tank.
Sacrificial Anode Protection
A sacrificial anode gradually corrodes in preference to the cylinder, helping protect the steel tank during normal operation.
Dual-Handed Plumbing
Rinnai duplicates the plumbing connections on both sides of the cylinder, providing flexibility for compatible replacement installations.
Internal or External Installation
The Hotflo range has an IPX4 ingress-protection rating and Rinnai lists it for suitable internal or external installations.
Thermostatic Safety Control
The water heater uses thermostatic control together with an over-temperature cut-out for the heating element.
Lead-Free Compliance
Rinnai's current installation manual states that the Hotflo electric range complies with the lead-free requirements of the National Construction Code Volume 3.

Can the Rinnai Hotflo 400L Be Installed Indoors or Outdoors?
Yes. Rinnai gives the Hotflo electric storage range an IPX4 ingress-protection rating and states that the range is suitable for internal or external installation.
The water heater must be installed in a vertically upright position on a level and stable base. Rinnai recommends a ground- or floor-level installation that can be serviced without the use of a ladder or scaffold.
Where leakage in an indoor installation could cause property damage, Rinnai requires a compliant safe tray and drain.
What Is Required to Install the Rinnai Hotflo 400L?
Rinnai states that the Hotflo electric storage water heater must be installed, commissioned and serviced by an authorised or qualified person in accordance with applicable plumbing and electrical requirements.
- Level and stable supporting base
- Vertical upright installation

Rinnai Hotflo 400L Water Pressure Requirements
Rinnai specifies a 1000 kPa Pressure & Temperature Relief valve for the current EHFA400 configuration.
Where an expansion-control valve is installed, Rinnai specifies an 850 kPa ECV and a maximum inlet pressure of 680 kPa. Without an ECV, the published maximum inlet pressure is 800 kPa.
Rinnai recommends a 500 kPa pressure-limiting valve and requires a PLV where mains pressure exceeds the permitted limits. The manufacturer also states that supply pressure should be greater than approximately 350 kPa for true mains-pressure operational performance.
Mains-Pressure Hot Water
The Hotflo 400L connects directly to the mains water supply and is designed as a mains-pressure storage water heater.
Its large stored-water capacity makes it suitable for homes where multiple hot-water outlets may be used through the day, but actual pressure and flow at showers and taps still depend on the property's incoming pressure, pipe sizing, valves and plumbing layout.
Can the Hotflo 400L Use Off-Peak Electricity?
Yes. Rinnai states that a single-element Hotflo can be connected to either continuous or off-peak electricity depending on the capacity required and daily usage.
With off-peak power, the heater receives electricity only during set periods, so enough hot water must be stored to cover the household's usage between heating cycles.
Twin-element models can provide additional flexibility because the lower element can heat the whole cylinder while the upper element acts as a booster during periods of high demand.
Rinnai Hotflo 400L Heating Recovery Guide
Rinnai publishes estimated heating rates based on a 50°C temperature rise. Actual recovery depends on incoming water temperature, thermostat setting, cylinder condition and electricity supply.
3.6kW Element
Estimated heating rate of approximately 61.9 litres per hour for a 50°C temperature rise.
4.8kW Element
Estimated heating rate of approximately 82.5 litres per hour for a 50°C temperature rise.
Thermostat & Scald Protection
Rinnai's current Hotflo manual states that the stored water temperature must not be set below 60°C to meet regulatory requirements.
The thermostat is factory preset to approximately 70°C and can be adjusted between 60°C and 70°C by an electrician or other suitably qualified tradesperson.
Because stored water at these temperatures can cause severe scalding, temperature-limiting or tempering equipment is required for relevant personal-hygiene outlets in accordance with applicable plumbing regulations.
Sacrificial Anode Maintenance
The Hotflo 400L contains a sacrificial anode that gradually dissipates while helping protect the steel cylinder from corrosion.
Rinnai recommends that the anode be inspected at least every 5 years and replaced when required.
The factory-fitted Rinnai anode is magnesium based and is intended for water with Total Dissolved Solids up to 600 mg/L. Rinnai specifies an aluminium-based anode where TDS exceeds 600 mg/L.
Rinnai also warns that bore-water quality is generally unsuitable without assessment. Where water quality is uncertain, it should be checked against the manufacturer's warranty conditions.
Rinnai Hotflo 400L Maintenance
Rinnai requires periodic attention to the relief valves, anode and installation drainage.
- Operate the PTR valve easing gear every 6 months
- Operate the ECV easing gear every 6 months where fitted
- Check any overflow tray and drain periodically for blockages
- Have the PTR valve checked or replaced at intervals not exceeding 5 years
- Have the ECV checked or replaced at intervals not exceeding 5 years where fitted
- Inspect the sacrificial anode at least every 5 years
- Service more frequently where scaling water conditions require it
Rinnai separately recommends annual qualified servicing for commercial appliances. Residential servicing should follow the specific maintenance intervals and conditions in the manufacturer's current manual.

Tempering Valve and Element Information
*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.
If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.
Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.
Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.
1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.
This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.
Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.
**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
