Vulcan 125L Electric Storage Hot Water System
The Vulcan 125L Electric Water Heater is a compact mains-pressure electric storage system designed for smaller households, units, townhouses, granny flats and replacement installations where a 160L or larger cylinder is unnecessary.
The current standard models are 601125G4 with a 1.8kW heating element and 601125G7 with a 3.6kW heating element. Both provide 125 litres of manufacturer-listed hot-water delivery and use a single electric heating element.
Vulcan currently lists the 125L for up to four people under its stated sizing assumptions. Actual suitability still depends on shower duration, outlet flow rates, baths, climate, household routines and how much time the appliance has available to reheat.
Installed Today can offer the Vulcan 125L as supply only or through eligible supplied-and-installed pathways in Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas, subject to product availability, plumbing, electrical supply, water pressure, drainage, access and installation requirements.
Which Vulcan 125L Models Are Current?
601125G4
The G4 variant uses a 1.8kW single heating element.
601125G7
The G7 variant uses a 3.6kW single heating element.
Both models belong to Vulcan's standard 601 Series electric storage range and share the same 125L delivery, dimensions, plumbing arrangement and pressure specifications.
How Many People Does the Vulcan 125L Suit?
Vulcan currently gives the 125L a maximum guide of four people under the manufacturer's stated sizing conditions.
The product is primarily aimed at smaller households and warmer-climate applications where daily hot-water demand is moderate.
Units & Apartments
The relatively narrow cylinder can suit smaller residential properties where available plant space is limited.
Townhouses & Granny Flats
The 125L can provide a practical whole-home storage solution where demand remains moderate.
Like-for-Like Replacement
It is particularly relevant where an existing 125L electric cylinder already occupies a suitable location.
The manufacturer occupant guide is not a guarantee. Long showers, high-flow fixtures, large baths or several users drawing hot water close together can justify a larger system.

How Does the Vulcan 125L Heat Water?
The Vulcan 125L uses one electric immersion heating element positioned within the lower section of the storage cylinder.
The thermostat automatically switches the element on when stored-water temperature falls and switches it off when the selected temperature is reached.
The G4 model uses a 1.8kW element while the G7 uses a 3.6kW element.
The higher-power G7 can add heat to the tank at a faster electrical input rate, but it also places a larger load on the electrical circuit.
Does the Vulcan 125L Require Continuous Power?
Vulcan's product page lists the 125L for continuous electricity supply.
The current installation manual adds an important qualification: the 601125 may also be suitable for an Extended Off-Peak or Extended time-controlled supply where the local electricity authority permits that type of connection.
This differs from a short overnight-only off-peak arrangement because an extended controlled supply provides additional heating availability during the day.
How Is the Vulcan 125L Connected?
Vulcan specifies direct connection to a 220–240V AC, 50Hz mains power supply.
The appliance is permanently wired rather than connected as a portable plug-in water heater.
The final cable, circuit capacity, isolation and protective-device arrangement must suit the exact element rating and the existing electrical installation.
Changing from a lower-powered heater to the 3.6kW G7 can require electrical assessment even where the replacement cylinder physically fits the same location.
Can the Vulcan 125L Be Installed Inside or Outside?
Yes. Vulcan specifies the 601125 as suitable for indoor or outdoor installation.
The water heater must remain upright on a stable supporting surface and needs safe access for plumbing, electrical work, maintenance and future replacement.
Indoor locations require additional consideration of possible water damage and drainage if a future leak occurs.
When Does the Vulcan 125L Need a Safe Tray?
Where water leaking from the cylinder could damage the property, Vulcan requires a suitable safe tray beneath the water heater.
This is particularly relevant in laundries, internal cupboards, apartments and other indoor positions.
The tray needs an appropriate drain arrangement.
How Big Is the Vulcan 125L?
The 125L measures approximately 1250mm high x 480mm wide x 515mm maximum depth.
Vulcan lists an approximate empty weight of 41kg and shipped weight of approximately 44kg.
Its narrow cabinet can make it easier to accommodate than larger family storage cylinders, but access and service space still need to be checked before ordering.
- Check doorway and gate widths
- Check cupboard depth and height
- Check stairs and raised platforms
- Allow room for plumbing valves
- Allow access to the electrical service cover
- Maintain future service access
- Confirm the old cylinder can be removed
Where Are the Plumbing Connections?
Vulcan's current installation guide specifies left-hand water and TPR-valve connections only for the 601 Series 125L.
The hot and cold water connections are Rp 3/4, while the TPR-valve connection is Rp 1/2.
Connection orientation matters when replacing an existing cylinder because additional pipework may be required where the old heater has a substantially different connection layout.
What Water Pressure Limits Apply?
The Vulcan 125L uses a 1000kPa temperature and pressure relief valve.
Where an expansion control valve is fitted, Vulcan specifies an 850kPa ECV.
| Cold-Water Arrangement | Maximum Mains Supply Pressure |
|---|---|
| With Expansion Control Valve | 680kPa |
| Without Expansion Control Valve | 800kPa |
If incoming water pressure exceeds the applicable manufacturer limit, the installation needs an appropriate pressure-limiting arrangement.
Does Every Vulcan 125L Need an ECV?
No. Vulcan lists an 850kPa ECV specification for installations where an expansion control valve is required rather than stating that one is universal to every property.
Where fitted, the ECV provides a lower-pressure relief point on the cold-water side as the stored water expands during heating.
The licensed plumber confirms the appropriate valve arrangement for the actual site.
Does the Vulcan 125L Need Drainage?
Yes. The TPR valve and any fitted expansion control valve need appropriate discharge lines.
The drain arrangement must allow discharge to remain open to atmosphere and run safely toward an appropriate termination point.
If the existing drainage cannot be reused for the replacement heater, additional plumbing work can be required.
How Hot Does the Vulcan 125L Store Water?
Vulcan's current owner guide states that the 80L to 160L models can operate between approximately 60°C and 70°C, depending on thermostat setting.
The thermostat is a tradesperson-adjustable control rather than a normal household user control.
Because stored water can be significantly hotter than normal showering temperature, the completed installation needs the appropriate temperature-control arrangement for personal-hygiene fixtures where delivery-temperature limitation applies.
How Is the Vulcan 125L Tank Protected?
The water heater stores water inside a vitreous-enamel-lined steel cylinder.
The enamel coating works together with sacrificial anode protection to protect the steel storage vessel.
Water chemistry can influence the correct anode specification, cylinder service life and warranty requirements.
What Maintenance Does Vulcan Recommend?
Vulcan recommends regular minor maintenance and a professional major service in the fifth year after installation.
Minor Maintenance
The manufacturer's maintenance guidance includes periodic operation of the TPR-valve easing lever, the ECV lever where an ECV is fitted and checking safe-tray drainage where applicable.
Fifth-Year Major Service
The major service includes inspection of the water heater, valves, anode protection, electric heating components, drainage and plumbing connections.
Vulcan 125L Warranty
For the current 601 Series 125L water heater, Vulcan's detailed warranty provides:
| Period | Component | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | All components | Repair or replacement of the faulty component, including labour, subject to warranty terms |
| Years 2–10 | Cylinder in a single-family domestic dwelling | Replacement cylinder supplied; installation and repair labour is the owner's responsibility |
| Years 2–3 | Cylinder where not installed in a single-family domestic dwelling | Replacement cylinder supplied; installation and repair labour is the owner's responsibility |
This is commonly summarised as a 10-year cylinder warranty for qualifying domestic installations, but the detailed terms distinguish between component coverage and labour during the extended period.
When Does a 125L Make More Sense Than an 80L?
The 125L stores considerably more hot water and can be better suited where a small household needs whole-home hot water rather than a very compact low-demand cylinder.
It can provide more reserve for consecutive showers and normal kitchen or laundry use.
An 80L system can still be more appropriate where demand is genuinely low or installation space is extremely restricted.
When Does a 125L Make More Sense Than a 160L?
The 125L is shorter and stores less water than the Vulcan 160L.
It can suit smaller homes where daily demand remains moderate and the extra 35 litres of storage offered by the 160L is unnecessary.
The 160L can provide more reserve where there are longer showers, more occupants or more concentrated hot-water use.
When Is a 250L System More Appropriate?
A 250L water heater provides substantially more stored hot water and is generally aimed at stronger whole-home family demand.
The 125L can make more sense for smaller households, secondary dwellings and lower-demand properties where the physical size and extra storage of a 250L cylinder are unnecessary.
How Does the Vulcan 125L Compare With a Heat Pump?
The Vulcan 125L uses a conventional resistive electric element to heat stored water.
A heat-pump system uses a refrigeration cycle to transfer heat from the surrounding air into the water and can use less electrical energy under suitable conditions.
The Vulcan can provide a straightforward compact electric-storage replacement where the existing plumbing, electrical supply and installation position are already suitable.
A heat-pump conversion introduces different requirements including airflow, condensate drainage, compressor sound, outdoor clearances and a physically different appliance footprint.
When Is the Vulcan 125L Not the Right System?
- Household demand regularly exceeds 125L storage and available recovery
- The existing electrical supply does not suit the selected element
- Incoming water pressure cannot be brought within manufacturer limits
- Required relief drainage cannot be provided
- The installation position cannot safely support the filled water heater
- Access does not allow safe installation or future servicing
- A larger household requires substantially greater stored capacity

Tempering Valve and Element Information
*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.
If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.
Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.
Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.
1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.
This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.
Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.
**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
