Vulcan 250L Electric Storage Hot Water System
The Vulcan 250L Electric Water Heater is a mains-pressure electric storage system designed for small-to-medium households needing more stored hot water than a compact electric cylinder without moving to a larger 315L or 400L system.
The current standard 250L range includes 661250G7, 661250G7/BL and 661250G8. The G7 variants use a 3.6kW single heating element, while the G8 uses a 4.8kW single heating element.
Vulcan lists the 250L with 250 litres of hot-water delivery and a maximum household guide of up to eight people under the manufacturer's stated sizing assumptions.
Installed Today can offer the Vulcan 250L as supply only or through eligible supplied-and-installed pathways in Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas, subject to product availability and the property's plumbing, electrical supply, access, drainage, water pressure and installation conditions.
Which Vulcan 250L Models Are Current?
661250G7
Standard 250L single-element configuration with a 3.6kW heating element.
661250G7/BL
Vulcan also lists a separate G7/BL catalogue variant with the same 3.6kW element rating and core 250L specifications.
661250G8
Standard 250L single-element configuration with a 4.8kW heating element.
These models form part of the standard Vulcan electric range and should not be confused with the separate Duomax product family.
How Many People Does the Vulcan 250L Suit?
Vulcan currently gives the 250L a maximum guide of eight people under the manufacturer's stated household-sizing assumptions.
Actual suitability depends on more than tank litres. Shower duration, fixture flow rate, baths, dishwasher and laundry demand, climate and the amount of time available for reheating all affect how much stored hot water a household needs.
Small to Medium Families
The 250L sits between compact electric storage systems and larger 315L or 400L family cylinders.
Consistent Daily Demand
It can suit homes where several occupants use hot water but the additional capacity of a larger cylinder is unnecessary.
Like-for-Like Replacement
It is particularly relevant where an existing 250L electric storage heater already occupies a suitable installation position.
The manufacturer occupant number is a sizing guide rather than a guarantee for every household.

Is the Vulcan 250L Single Element?
Yes. The current standard Vulcan 250L models use one electric immersion heating element positioned near the base of the cylinder.
The G7 variants use a 3.6kW element and the G8 uses a 4.8kW element.
The element rating affects the electrical load and the rate at which energy can be put back into the stored water, so the existing electrical circuit must suit the exact model being installed.
How Is the Vulcan 250L Connected to Power?
Vulcan specifies direct connection to a 220–240V AC, 50Hz mains electrical supply.
The water heater is permanently wired. The final circuit, cable, isolation and protective-device arrangement must suit the selected element and the property's electrical installation.
The manufacturer installation instructions also require an isolating switch at the switchboard and contain additional isolation and residual-current protection requirements that the attending licensed electrical worker must assess for the actual installation.
If the existing circuit requires extension, rewiring, load changes, switchboard work or another fixed-wiring modification, that is additional electrical work rather than simple appliance disconnect and reconnect.
Can the Vulcan 250L Use an Off-Peak Tariff?
Yes. Vulcan identifies the standard 250L as suitable for connection to off-peak electricity.
The current manufacturer guide states that a single-element model can use an off-peak, extended off-peak or continuous electricity supply, depending on the water-heater size, local electricity arrangements and household requirements.
With time-controlled electricity, the cylinder needs enough heating time to store sufficient hot water before the supply is switched off again.
Can the Vulcan 250L Be Installed Inside or Outside?
Yes. Vulcan specifies the standard 250L for indoor or outdoor installation.
The water heater must remain vertically upright on a stable supporting surface and needs suitable access for plumbing, electrical connection, maintenance and eventual replacement.
The location should also allow the TPR valve, front service cover and other serviceable components to remain safely accessible.
When Does the Vulcan 250L Need a Safe Tray?
Vulcan requires a suitable safe tray where a future leak from the water heater could cause property damage.
This is particularly relevant to indoor positions such as laundries, cupboards and other internal areas where escaped water could damage floors, walls, cabinetry or surrounding finishes.
The tray requires its own appropriate drainage arrangement.
What Base Does the Vulcan 250L Need?
The cylinder must stand vertically on a stable supporting surface capable of carrying the complete operating load.
The unit weighs approximately 74kg before water is added, so the filled operating weight is substantially greater than the empty appliance weight.
An existing support can be reused where it remains stable, appropriately sized and suitable for the replacement cylinder.
If the existing base is cracked, unstable, too small or otherwise unsuitable, support work needs to be completed before the new water heater is commissioned.
How Large Is the Vulcan 250L?
The current 250L measures approximately 1395mm high x 640mm wide x 680mm deep and weighs approximately 74kg empty.
It is smaller and lighter than Vulcan's 315L and 400L cylinders, but access should still be checked before delivery and installation.
- Check gate and passage widths
- Check stairs and significant steps
- Check steep or uneven access
- Check doorways and cupboard openings
- Allow for trolley access where practical
- Allow future servicing access
- Confirm the old cylinder can also be removed safely
Where Are the Vulcan 250L Plumbing Connections?
The current 661 Series 250L uses left-hand water and TPR-valve connections.
The hot and cold water connections are Rp 3/4 and the relief-valve connection is Rp 1/2.
This matters on replacement jobs because an existing cylinder with similar connection positions can require less plumbing alteration than one with a substantially different connection layout.
What Water Pressure Limits Apply?
The Vulcan 250L uses a 1000kPa temperature and pressure relief valve.
Where an expansion control valve is fitted, Vulcan specifies an 850kPa ECV.
| Cold-Water Arrangement | Maximum Mains Supply Pressure |
|---|---|
| With Expansion Control Valve | 680kPa |
| Without Expansion Control Valve | 800kPa |
If the property's incoming mains pressure exceeds the applicable limit, Vulcan requires an approved pressure-limiting valve.
The manufacturer also states that water-supply pressure should be above approximately 350kPa to achieve true mains-pressure operation.
Does Every Vulcan 250L Need an Expansion Control Valve?
No. Vulcan does not state that an ECV must be fitted to every installation.
An expansion control valve is required in certain locations and water conditions.
Where fitted, the ECV has a lower pressure setting than the TPR valve and can discharge the thermal expansion created while stored water is heating.
The licensed plumber determines the appropriate cold-water valve arrangement for the actual property.
Does the Vulcan 250L Need Relief-Valve Drainage?
Yes. The TPR valve and any installed expansion control valve require appropriate drain lines.
Vulcan specifies that relief drains remain open to atmosphere and run continuously downward toward their suitable termination point.
The discharge position needs to remain visible and be arranged so hot water cannot create injury, property damage or nuisance.
If an existing relief drain cannot be reused for the replacement installation, additional drainage work can be required.
How Hot Does the Vulcan 250L Store Water?
The current Vulcan thermostat is tradesperson-adjustable between approximately 60°C and 70°C.
The current manufacturer guide lists the factory thermostat setting at approximately 70°C.
The stored water therefore needs the appropriate downstream temperature-control arrangement where delivery temperature must be limited at personal-hygiene fixtures.
How Is the Vulcan 250L Cylinder Protected?
The Vulcan stores water inside a vitreous-enamel-lined steel cylinder.
The enamel lining works together with sacrificial anode protection to protect the steel vessel.
Water chemistry influences the correct anode selection and can affect cylinder life and warranty coverage.
Vulcan's current manufacturer documentation includes different anode recommendations according to the total dissolved solids in the water supply.
What Maintenance Does Vulcan Recommend?
Vulcan recommends minor maintenance every six months and a professional major service every five years.
Every Six Months
Gently operate the TPR-valve easing lever, operate the ECV lever where one is fitted and check safe-tray drainage where applicable.
Every Five Years
The major service includes replacing the TPR valve, inspecting the ECV where fitted, inspecting the anode, checking the electric heating unit and inspecting the cylinder and connections.
Vulcan 250L Warranty
For the current 661 Series 250–400L electric water heaters, Vulcan's detailed warranty provides:
| Period | Component | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | All components | Repair or replacement of the faulty component, including labour, subject to warranty terms |
| Years 2–10 | Cylinder in a single-family domestic dwelling | Replacement cylinder supplied; installation and repair labour is the owner's responsibility |
| Years 2–3 | Cylinder where not installed in a single-family domestic dwelling | Replacement cylinder supplied; installation and repair labour is the owner's responsibility |
This is why the product is commonly marketed with a 10-year cylinder warranty, while the detailed warranty terms distinguish between parts and labour during the extended period.
When Does a 250L Make More Sense Than a 160L?
The 250L stores more hot water and can be better suited where household demand regularly exceeds what a smaller electric cylinder can provide.
This may include homes with more occupants, longer showers or more concentrated morning and evening demand.
A 160L model can remain more appropriate where household use is lower and the additional 250L capacity is unnecessary.
When Does a 250L Make More Sense Than a 315L?
The 250L requires less physical space and stores less water than the 315L model.
A 315L cylinder can be useful where demand is consistently higher, while a 250L can be a more appropriate fit where a household needs medium-capacity electric storage without the extra footprint and storage volume of the larger system.
How Does the Vulcan 250L Compare With a Heat Pump?
The Vulcan uses a conventional resistive electric element to heat water stored inside the cylinder.
A heat-pump water heater uses a refrigeration cycle to transfer thermal energy from surrounding air into stored water and can use less electrical energy under suitable operating conditions.
The Vulcan can provide a straightforward replacement where a property is already configured for electric storage.
A heat-pump conversion introduces different considerations including airflow, condensate drainage, compressor noise, installation clearances and potentially different electrical requirements.
When Is the Vulcan 250L Not the Right Product?
The 250L should be selected only where its storage capacity, electrical supply and installation requirements suit the property.
- Not intended for pool heating
- Not a plug-in portable appliance
- Not suitable where the support cannot carry the filled operating load
- Not suitable where required relief drainage cannot be provided
- Electrical circuit must suit the selected element
- Water pressure must remain within manufacturer limits
- Indoor installations need appropriate leak-management arrangements where required

Tempering Valve and Element Information
*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.
If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.
Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.
Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.
1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.
This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.
Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.
**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
