VULCAN ELECTRIC HOT WATER

Vulcan Duomax 400L Electric Storage Hot Water System

The Vulcan Duomax 400L Electric Storage Hot Water System is a large-capacity electric water heater designed for households with higher daily hot water demand and properties replacing an existing large electric storage system.

This model combines 400 litres of hot water delivery, a 3.6 kW single heating element, vitreous enamel cylinder construction and suitability for indoor or outdoor installation where the site meets the required plumbing, drainage, electrical and access conditions.

Installed Today offers the Vulcan Duomax 400L as a supply-only hot water system or with supplied-and-installed options in selected Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas, where available.

Vulcan Duomax 400L at a glance: this is a large 400L electric storage water heater suited to higher-demand households and large electric hot water replacements. The 3.6 kW single-element model offers substantial stored hot water capacity, is suitable for off-peak connection where appropriate and can be installed indoors or outdoors where the installation conditions are suitable.
WHAT IT DOES

What Does the Vulcan Duomax 400L Do?

The Vulcan Duomax 400L stores and heats a large volume of water inside an insulated vitreous enamel lined cylinder. The electric element heats the stored water so it is available when showers, baths, sinks and other hot water outlets are used.

Its larger storage volume makes it particularly relevant to homes that need more stored hot water than smaller 250L or 315L electric systems can provide.

Because this is a storage system, correct sizing matters. Household demand, tariff arrangement, shower duration, shower flow rates and the number of people using hot water all influence whether a 400L system is appropriate.

WHO IT SUITS

Who Is the Vulcan Duomax 400L Best For?

Larger Households

Designed for households that need a substantial volume of stored hot water for regular showers, baths, kitchen use and other daily hot water demand.

Large Electric Replacements

A practical option where an existing large electric storage system is being replaced and the current location, plumbing and electrical supply remain suitable.

Off-Peak Electric Hot Water

Suitable for connection to an off-peak tariff where the property's electrical arrangement, household demand and energy retailer setup support it.

WHO IT HELPS

What Problems Can the Vulcan Duomax 400L Help Solve?

Not Enough Stored Hot Water

The 400L delivery provides more stored hot water than smaller common electric storage sizes, making it relevant for households with higher usage.

Replacing an Ageing Large Cylinder

It can provide a straightforward electric storage pathway where an older large-capacity system has reached the end of its service life.

High Household Demand

Large families, multiple occupants and homes with frequent bath or shower use may benefit from the additional stored capacity where correctly sized.

10 Years Cylinder Warranty

The manufacturer household guide is based on stated usage conditions. Actual suitability depends on hot water demand, shower habits, climate and tariff arrangement.

PRODUCT SUITABILITY

Is the Vulcan Duomax 400L Right for My Home?

A Good Choice If...

You need a large electric storage system, have high daily hot water demand or are replacing an existing 400L electric water heater in a suitable location.

Consider Another Option If...

Check Before Ordering

Confirm system access, dimensions, electrical supply, valves, water pressure, drainage, base condition, pipework and whether the installation will be indoors or outdoors.

HOUSEHOLD SIZING

How Many People Can the Vulcan Duomax 400L Suit?

Vulcan lists the 400L model as servicing a maximum of 9 people under the manufacturer's stated usage conditions.

This should be treated as a sizing guide rather than a guarantee. Actual hot water demand can vary significantly between households.

  • Number of people in the home
  • Average shower duration
  • Shower flow rates
  • Bath usage
  • Laundry and kitchen hot water demand
  • Climate and incoming water temperature
  • Electricity tariff arrangement
  • Timing of hot water usage
HOW IT WORKS

How Does the Vulcan Duomax 400L Work?

1. Cold Water Enters

Cold water enters the storage cylinder through the water supply connection.

2. The Element Heats the Water

The 3.6 kW electric heating element heats the stored water inside the cylinder.

3. Hot Water Is Stored

The heated water remains stored and ready for use until it is drawn through the home's hot water outlets.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

What Is Required to Install the Vulcan Duomax 400L?

A 400L electric storage system is a substantial appliance and the installation position needs to be checked carefully before delivery and installation.

  • Suitable level and stable installation position
  • Enough space for the 1840 mm x 690 mm x 730 mm unit
  • Safe delivery and lifting access
  • Suitable cold and hot water pipework
  • Correct valve arrangement
  • Water pressure within system requirements
  • Suitable relief and expansion drainage
  • Appropriate electrical supply for the 3.6 kW element
  • Suitable isolation and electrical compliance
  • Service and maintenance access
  • Indoor tray and drainage requirements where applicable
  • Suitable outdoor position where installed externally
LARGE SYSTEM ACCESS

Will the Vulcan Duomax 400L Fit in the Existing Location?

The Vulcan Duomax 400L measures approximately 1840 mm high, 690 mm wide and 730 mm deep. These dimensions should be checked against both the final installation position and the path required to get the unit into place.

Access can become especially important on properties with narrow side paths, stairs, steep sites, raised platforms, tight laundries, cupboards or other restricted areas.

Check the delivery path as well as the final position. A site can have enough room for a 400L cylinder once installed but still require additional labour or planning if access to that location is difficult.
ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS

What Electrical Supply Does the Vulcan Duomax 400L Need?

This selected model uses a 3.6 kW single electric element. The existing electrical circuit, isolator and wiring should be checked before installation to confirm suitability.

Where an existing electric storage heater is being replaced, the current electrical arrangement may be reusable if it is suitable and compliant. Circuit changes, isolator upgrades or other electrical alterations may require additional work.

Any required electrical work should be completed by an appropriately licensed electrical contractor.

OFF-PEAK HOT WATER

Can the Vulcan Duomax 400L Run on an Off-Peak Tariff?

Yes. The Vulcan 400L electric storage range is suitable for connection to an off-peak tariff where the property's electricity arrangement supports it.

Large storage systems can work well with controlled-load or off-peak arrangements because a substantial volume of water can be heated during the available heating period and stored for later use.

Household demand and available heating time should still be considered. A tariff arrangement that provides limited heating time needs enough storage capacity to cover the household's hot water use between heating periods.

WATER PRESSURE

What Water Pressure Limits Apply?

850 kPa ECV Setting

The listed expansion control valve setting for the 400L system is 850 kPa.

680 kPa With ECV

The listed maximum water supply pressure is 680 kPa where an expansion control valve is installed.

800 kPa Without ECV

The listed maximum water supply pressure without an expansion control valve is 800 kPa.

Incoming water pressure and the required valve arrangement should be checked as part of installation planning.

INDOOR OR OUTDOOR

Can the Vulcan Duomax 400L Be Installed Indoors or Outdoors?

Indoor Installation

Indoor installation is possible where the position provides suitable access, drainage, leak protection, plumbing, electrical supply and any required safe tray arrangement.

Outdoor Installation

Outdoor installation is possible where the system has a suitable stable base, adequate service access and compliant plumbing and electrical connections.

REPLACEMENT & UPGRADES

Can the Vulcan Duomax 400L Replace My Existing Electric System?

It may be well suited to a like-for-like replacement where the existing water heater is a similar large electric storage system and the existing position has suitable space, plumbing, drainage and electrical capacity.

Replacement becomes less straightforward if the new system needs to be relocated, existing valves are unsuitable, pipe positions differ, electrical upgrades are required or access is difficult.

Like-for-Like Replacement

Usually the simplest pathway where the location and services already suit a large electric storage system.

Changing Tank Size

Moving from a smaller tank may require additional space, altered pipework, drainage changes or different installation support.

Changing Technology

If you are considering a heat pump, solar or another technology, installation and site requirements can be substantially different.

Brisbane Gold Coast Sydney Melbourne Adelaide Perth
BRISBANE INSTALLATION

Vulcan Duomax 400L Supply & Installation Brisbane

The Vulcan Duomax 400L can suit Brisbane households replacing a large electric storage system where the existing position, electrical supply, water pressure, drainage and access are appropriate.

Before installation, the site should be checked for valve condition, pipework, electrical requirements, system base, delivery access and any work required to remove the existing heater.

GOLD COAST INSTALLATION

Vulcan Duomax 400L Supply & Installation Gold Coast

Gold Coast customers may be able to choose the Vulcan Duomax 400L as a supplied-and-installed replacement where service coverage and site conditions allow.

The larger cylinder size means access, base condition and installation space should be confirmed carefully, particularly in properties with narrow side access, internal utility areas or elevated installation positions.

LARGE-CAPACITY ELECTRIC STORAGE

Why Choose a 400L Electric Hot Water System?

A 400L system provides a substantial reserve of stored hot water for households where smaller tanks may not provide enough capacity between heating cycles.

It can be especially useful for larger families, homes with multiple occupants, frequent shower use and properties where large electric storage is already established.

The trade-off is that a large tank requires more physical space and stores more water than a smaller unit, so sizing should be based on actual household demand rather than simply choosing the largest available system.

COMPARE YOUR OPTIONS

Vulcan Duomax 400L vs a 315L Electric Storage System

Consideration 400L Electric Storage 315L Electric Storage
Stored Hot Water Greater stored capacity Lower stored capacity
Typical Application Larger or higher-demand households Medium to larger households depending on usage
Physical Size Larger installation footprint Generally smaller
Best Reason to Choose Additional stored hot water is genuinely required Household demand does not justify the extra 400L capacity
COMPARE TECHNOLOGIES

Vulcan Duomax 400L vs Heat Pump Hot Water

The Vulcan Duomax uses a conventional electric resistance element to heat stored water. A heat pump transfers heat from the surrounding air into the water and operates differently.

Choose Large Electric Storage When...

You want a straightforward large-capacity electric replacement and the existing plumbing, electrical supply and installation position are already suitable.

Consider a Heat Pump When...

You are considering a change in hot water technology and have a suitable location with the required airflow, drainage, electrical supply and installation conditions.

FINAL CHECK

Is the Vulcan Duomax 400L Right for You?

The Vulcan Duomax 400L is primarily suited to households wanting a large electric storage hot water system with substantial stored capacity and a conventional single-element electric setup.

Its key strengths are its 400L hot water delivery, 3.6 kW single element, indoor or outdoor installation suitability and ability to work with off-peak electricity arrangements where appropriate.

Tempering Valve and Element Information

*Element size information:
All electric hot water units are supplied as standard with a 3.6kW element unless otherwise stated on the product page, invoice, or order confirmation.

If a different element configuration is requested, such as 1.8kW or 2.4kW, the hot water unit may still arrive with the standard 3.6kW element fitted from the manufacturer. The requested 1.8kW or 2.4kW element will be supplied separately with the order for installation by a suitably licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder.

Any element changeover, electrical connection, disconnection, wiring, testing, or modification must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder. Elements must not be changed, connected, modified, or tested by an unlicensed person.

Alternative elements supplied for non-standard configurations may be generic replacement elements and may not be the same brand as the hot water unit unless specifically stated. Generic elements are supplied to suit the requested element size and electrical configuration, but final suitability must be checked by the licensed installer before installation.

1.8kW and 2.4kW elements supplied separately with a hot water unit include a 12-month supply-only parts warranty from the date of purchase, provided the element has been correctly installed by a licensed electrical contractor or licensed electrical licence holder and used under normal operating conditions.

This element warranty covers the replacement supply of the element only. It does not include labour, call-out fees, electrical work, plumbing work, fault finding, removal, reinstallation, testing, travel, downtime, damage caused by incorrect installation, or any other associated costs. Warranty may be declined where the element has been incorrectly installed, dry-fired, modified, damaged, connected to incorrect voltage or wiring, affected by power issues, used in unsuitable water conditions, or installed by an unlicensed person.

Proof of purchase, installer details, electrical licence details, photos, and/or return of the faulty element may be required before a warranty claim is approved.

**Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.

A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.

If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.

If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.

Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
