Rheem 16L Natural Gas Continuous Flow Hot Water System 50°C – 876A16NF
The Rheem 16L Natural Gas Continuous Flow Hot Water System 50°C is a compact outdoor water heater designed for apartments, townhouses, granny flats and smaller homes wanting continuous hot water without a storage cylinder.
The 876A16NF is the Natural Gas version of Rheem's 16L 50°C continuous-flow water heater. It provides 16 L/min nominal hot-water capacity at a 25°C temperature rise, a 6 Star energy rating, a 50°C factory preset outlet temperature and nominal gas consumption of 126 MJ/hr.
Installed Today offers the Rheem 16L Natural Gas as a supply-only gas water heater or with supply and installation across eligible Brisbane and Gold Coast service areas.
About the Rheem 16L Natural Gas Continuous Flow Water Heater
The Rheem 16L heats water as it passes through the appliance rather than maintaining a tank of stored hot water.
When a suitable hot-water outlet is opened, the appliance detects demand and operates its electronic ignition, gas burner and combustion controls to heat the water while it is being used.
The compact wall-mounted format can suit smaller properties and compatible Natural Gas replacement installations where gas supply, water pressure, electricity and outdoor clearances meet Rheem's requirements.
876A16NF Is the Natural Gas Model
This page covers the Rheem 876A16NF Natural Gas model.
Rheem's current technical documentation identifies the current lead-free technical designation as 876A16NF-LF. In Rheem's model coding, N denotes Natural Gas, F denotes frost protection and -LF denotes current lead-free certification.
The Natural Gas and propane versions are separately configured appliances and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Confirm the gas type shown on the appliance rating label and the property's gas supply before installation.
Who Is the Rheem 16L Natural Gas Best For?
Apartments & Townhouses
The compact continuous-flow format can suit smaller properties where a large storage cylinder is unnecessary.
Around 1 to 1.5 Bathrooms
Rheem's current product page lists approximately 1.5 bathrooms, while its broader continuous-flow sizing table lists the 16L class at around 1 to 1.5 bathrooms.
Natural Gas Replacements
The 876A16NF can suit replacement of an existing outdoor Natural Gas continuous-flow system where the gas supply, plumbing, power and clearances remain suitable.
Rheem 16L Natural Gas Key Details
16 L/min Continuous Flow Performance
The advertised 16L rating is measured at a 25°C water-temperature rise.
Where the appliance needs to raise incoming water through a larger temperature difference, the available heated-water flow reduces.
| Temperature Rise | Rheem 16L Published Capacity |
|---|---|
| 25°C Rise | 16 L/min nominal capacity |
| 40°C Rise | 10.0 L/min water-heating capacity |
Actual hot-water flow at household fixtures also depends on incoming water temperature, mains pressure, Natural Gas supply, gas pipe sizing, fixture flow rates and simultaneous demand.
How Many Bathrooms Can the Rheem 16L Supply?
Rheem's current individual product page lists the 16L continuous-flow model for approximately 1.5 bathrooms.
Rheem's wider domestic hot-water specification table describes the 16L class as approximately 1 to 1.5 bathrooms.
These figures should be treated as sizing guidance rather than a guarantee of simultaneous unrestricted fixture flow.
Incoming water temperature, shower flow rates, water pressure, gas supply and household usage all influence actual performance.
Low-Flow Operation
Rheem's current 16L plumbers' information lists a minimum operating flow rate of 1.5 L/min.
The April 2025 Owner's Guide separately uses 2.0 L/min as a low-flow and commissioning reference.
Because Rheem currently publishes these figures in different technical contexts, the current documentation supplied with the appliance should be followed when assessing low-flow operation.
Factory Preset to 50°C
The 876 series is Rheem's 50°C factory preset continuous-flow range.
Rheem's current installation instructions state that an 876-series water heater delivers water not exceeding 50°C when installed in an approved configuration.
Rheem's 16L plumbers' information identifies the 50°C 876A16 as requiring no separate tempering valve in the normal compliant configuration.
Particular plumbing arrangements can still require additional temperature-control measures. The 876-series 50°C model should not be confused with Rheem's separate 874-series higher-temperature model.
Rheem Q Factor™ & FlameSafe® Protection
Rheem Q Factor™
Rheem describes Q Factor™ as technology designed to provide rapid hot water while reducing temperature fluctuations as continuous-flow demand changes.
FlameSafe® Protection
FlameSafe® overheat protection is designed to shut down the appliance before an overheating condition develops.

*Rheem publishes approximately 16kg on its current plumbers' information and 17.5kg unpackaged in the April 2025 Owner's Guide.
The Rheem 16L Natural Gas Is Outdoor Only
Rheem specifies the A16 continuous-flow water heater for outdoor installation only.
The appliance must be installed vertically upright with the gas, water and electrical connections on the underside and securely fixed to a suitable wall or frame.
The water heater must remain safely accessible for servicing, with the air inlet and flue terminal kept clear of vegetation and other obstructions.
Outdoor Flue-Terminal Clearance Requirements
The final installation location must comply with Rheem's instructions, AS/NZS 5601.1 and applicable local requirements.
- At least 300mm from the top of the flue terminal to eaves
- At least 300mm horizontally from the flue terminal to relevant building openings
- At least 1500mm vertically from the flue terminal to relevant openings
- At least 300mm horizontally from a return wall or external corner
- At least 1500mm to an opening in the direction of flue discharge
- At least 500mm to a fence, wall or other obstruction in the direction of discharge
- More than 450mm to an unobstructed property boundary in the direction of discharge
- Sufficient front access to remove the complete front panel for service
These are manufacturer guide extracts only. The licensed gas fitter must assess the actual location against the current Gas Installations Standard.
Natural Gas Flue Diverter Options
An outdoor continuous-flow gas water heater installed beneath a partially or fully covered area must satisfy Rheem's installation requirements and AS/NZS 5601.1.
For the A16NF Natural Gas model, Rheem lists specific flue-diverter options that can be used in certain compliant covered-area configurations.
Flue Terminal Diverter – 299336
Rheem permits this diverter on A16NF Natural Gas models in specified installations when fitted and positioned in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Extended Flue Terminal Diverter – 299334
Rheem also lists an extended diverter for specified Natural Gas installations where the discharge must extend beyond the applicable covered-area edge or corner.
These accessories do not automatically make a proposed covered location compliant. The complete site must still be assessed by the licensed gas fitter.
Rheem 16L Water Pressure Requirements
Rheem specifies a minimum mains water pressure of 120 kPa to achieve the rated flow and performance of the appliance.
The maximum mains water-supply pressure is 1000 kPa.
Where incoming supply pressure can exceed this value, Rheem requires an approved pressure-limiting valve without non-return characteristics.
The appliance incorporates an internal relief valve with a setting of 1750 kPa.
Rheem does not recommend installation of this model on a low-pressure water supply.
Gas Supply & Pipe Sizing Matter
The Rheem 16L has a nominal gas input of 126 MJ/hr. The Natural Gas meter, supply and pipework must be capable of supplying the appliance correctly under operating load.
Rheem's current technical data specifies a minimum Natural Gas supply pressure of 1.13 kPa and a maximum of 3.50 kPa.
During commissioning, Rheem requires the gas inlet pressure to be checked while the water heater and other gas-burning appliances on the same supply are operating.
If the required minimum pressure cannot be maintained, the gas meter, regulator or gas line may be undersized for the connected load.
The Rheem 16L Natural Gas Also Requires Electricity
Although Natural Gas provides the heat, the appliance requires electricity for its electronic controls, ignition, combustion fan and frost-protection system.
Rheem specifies a 220–240V AC, 50Hz power supply using the appliance's factory lead and plug with a suitable weatherproof general-purpose outlet.
The electrical outlet must be positioned clear of the flue exhaust, draining water, gas supply pipe and water connections.
Optional Rheem Temperature Controllers
Rheem allows compatible Standard temperature controllers to be fitted to approved single-water-heater installations.
Kitchen Controller
A compatible Rheem kitchen controller can provide convenient user temperature selection.
Bathroom 1 Controller
A compatible Bathroom 1 controller can provide temperature selection and priority operation.
Bathroom 2 Controller
A compatible Bathroom 2 controller can be incorporated where the approved controller arrangement allows it.
For the 876-series model, the available delivery-temperature settings remain subject to the 50°C system configuration.
Rheem's Standard controllers are intended for approved single-water-heater installations and controller compatibility should be confirmed before ordering.
Rheem 16L Accessory Options
Pipe Cover – 299430
Rheem lists a compatible pipe cover for suitable pipework beneath the appliance.
Recess Box – 299427
A compatible recess box is available for approved recessed wall installations.
Security Cage – 299867
Rheem lists a security cage as an optional accessory for compatible continuous-flow installations.
Wall Mount Security Kit – 299868
Rheem also lists a compatible wall-mount security kit for the range.
Rheem 16L vs 20L Continuous Flow
| Feature | Rheem 16L | Rheem 20L |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal Flow @ 25°C Rise | 16 L/min | 20 L/min |
| Water Heating @ 40°C Rise | 10.0 L/min | 12.5 L/min |
| Broad Rheem Bathroom Guide | Approx. 1–1.5 bathrooms | Approx. 1.5–2 bathrooms |
| Nominal Gas Consumption | 126 MJ/hr | 157 MJ/hr |
The 20L offers additional flow capacity but also requires more gas input. Select the model from actual household demand and the property's available gas-supply capacity.
Rheem 16L 50°C vs 60°C
50°C – 876 Series
The 876A16 is Rheem's factory 50°C temperature-limited version for suitable domestic applications.
60°C – 874 Series
The separate 874A16 can deliver higher-temperature water and may require additional temperature-limiting equipment for personal-hygiene outlets.
Choose the temperature version required by the property's plumbing arrangement and compliance requirements rather than treating the two model families as interchangeable.

Tempering valve information:
Where a hot water system is capable of delivering water above 50°C, a compliant tempering valve must be installed to control the temperature delivered to personal hygiene fixtures such as showers, baths, basins, and bathroom outlets. This helps reduce the risk of scalding and assists with meeting plumbing compliance requirements.
A tempering valve blends hot and cold water to deliver a safer controlled outlet temperature to required fixtures. The hot water unit itself may store water at a higher temperature, but the water delivered to personal hygiene outlets must be controlled where required by plumbing regulations.
If your property already has a suitable, compliant tempering valve installed, your licensed plumber can assess whether it is appropriate for use with the new hot water system. Existing valves may not always be suitable due to age, condition, compliance requirements, valve type, location, or system compatibility.
If a compliant tempering valve is not already installed, or if the existing valve is unsuitable, one must be supplied and installed by a licensed plumber as part of the hot water installation.
Tempering valves are not automatically included with every supply-only hot water unit unless specifically selected, listed as included, or purchased as part of a suitable valve kit. If a tempering valve is required, please purchase the appropriate valve kit with your order or arrange for your licensed installer to supply and install the correct tempering valve on site.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure the installation is completed by appropriately licensed trades and that all required valves, fittings, electrical work, plumbing work, and compliance requirements are allowed for as part of the installation.
