HOT WATER ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION ADD-ON
New 10A Power Point Installation with RCBO & Up to 5m Cabling
This electrical add-on provides a new 10 amp power point for a suitable hot water appliance, together with up to 5 metres of electrical cabling and a 20A RCBO package allowance, subject to the final circuit design and site suitability confirmed by the licensed electrician.
It is commonly used where a heat pump hot water system has a factory-fitted 10A plug and lead, or where a continuous-flow gas hot water system requires a nearby electrical outlet for ignition and controls.
The standard package assumes a practical cable route, suitable switchboard conditions and an electrical installation that can be completed within the included scope.
Where the cable route exceeds 5 metres, additional installed cabling is charged at $20 per metre.
Package at a glance: new 10A power point, up to 5 metres of cabling and the package's 20A RCBO allowance. The electrician will confirm the final circuit arrangement, protective-device rating, existing switchboard suitability and whether additional electrical work is required before connection.

COMMON APPLICATIONS
Which Hot Water Systems Commonly Need a 10A Power Point?
Plug-In Heat Pump Hot Water
Some heat pump hot water systems are supplied with a factory-fitted Australian 10A plug and lead and require a suitable power point within the manufacturer's permitted connection distance.
Continuous-Flow Gas Hot Water
Many continuous-flow gas systems require electricity for ignition, electronic controls and other powered functions even though the water itself is heated by gas.
Always follow the appliance manufacturer's electrical requirements. Not every heat pump or gas hot water system uses a standard 10A outlet, and some products require a different circuit, hardwired connection or electrical arrangement.
10 AMP POWER POINT
Where Is the New Power Point Installed?
The outlet is installed in a position suitable for the hot water appliance and consistent with the appliance manufacturer's installation requirements and applicable electrical rules.
The final position depends on factors such as:
- Hot water system location
- Length of the factory appliance lead
- Weather exposure
- Existing electrical circuit location
- Cable route
- Switchboard position
- Safe accessibility
- Manufacturer clearance requirements
The outlet must not be positioned simply for convenience if doing so would conflict with the appliance instructions or electrical requirements.
CABLING ALLOWANCE
How Much Electrical Cable Is Included?
The standard package includes up to 5 metres of cabling.
The installed cable length is based on the actual compliant route taken by the electrician rather than a straight-line measurement between the switchboard and the power point.
Cabling may need to travel through or around walls, roof spaces, external surfaces or other suitable accessible pathways.
Where the required installed route exceeds five metres, additional cable is charged at $20 per metre installed.
RCBO PROTECTION
What Is the RCBO For?
An RCBO combines overcurrent protection and residual-current protection within one protective device.
This package includes a 20A RCBO allowance, but the final circuit protection must be selected and installed by the licensed electrician based on the actual electrical installation.
The electrician must consider the connected load, circuit conductors, existing switchboard, existing circuit arrangement and applicable electrical requirements before finalising the protective device.
The advertised RCBO rating does not override the final electrical design. If the existing circuit, cabling or appliance requirements call for a different compliant arrangement, additional or alternative electrical work may be required.
EXISTING CIRCUIT
Can the New Power Point Be Connected to Any Existing Circuit?
No. The existing electrical installation must first be assessed for suitability.
The standard package is based on a suitable existing electrical arrangement being available for the proposed work.
The electrician may need to consider:
- Existing circuit loading
- Cable size and condition
- Existing protective devices
- Switchboard space
- Earthing arrangements
- Location of the new outlet
- Appliance electrical requirements
- Condition of existing electrical work
If the existing arrangement is not suitable, the work required to make it compliant may fall outside this standard add-on.
SWITCHBOARD REQUIREMENTS
What If the Existing Switchboard Needs More Work?
The standard add-on assumes the switchboard can accept the required electrical work without major alteration.
Additional work may be required where the switchboard has insufficient space, unsuitable existing protective devices, damaged components or another condition that prevents the advertised work from being safely completed.
Major switchboard alterations or upgrades are not automatically included in this package.
WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED
What Is Outside the Standard Power Point Installation?
Additional Electrical Infrastructure
- Major switchboard upgrades
- Switchboard replacement
- New sub-board installation
- Major circuit alterations
- Repairs to pre-existing electrical faults
Additional Site Work
- Cable beyond the included 5m
- Major wall or ceiling access work
- Concrete cutting
- Excavation or trenching
- Non-standard access work
Where work outside the standard scope is required, it can be identified before or during the electrical installation and priced separately as applicable.
LICENSED ELECTRICAL WORK
Who Can Install the New Power Point?
A new fixed power point and associated circuit work is electrical installation work and must be completed under the appropriate electrical licensing.
The electrician is responsible for confirming that the work being installed is electrically safe and suitable for the actual site conditions.
The electrical installation is also tested after the work is completed in accordance with the applicable electrical requirements.
This is not a DIY installation. Homeowners should not install or modify fixed power points, switchboard protection or fixed electrical wiring themselves.
TESTING & COMPLIANCE
Is the Electrical Work Tested After Installation?
Yes. Electrical installation work must be appropriately tested after completion.
For applicable electrical installation work in Queensland, the electrical contractor provides the required testing and compliance documentation for the work completed.
This helps document the electrical installation work carried out and the testing associated with the new installation.
HOT WATER ELECTRICAL ADD-ON
Why Add the Power Point at the Same Time as Your Hot Water Order?
Some replacement hot water systems cannot use the electrical arrangement left by the previous appliance.
A plug-in heat pump may need a correctly positioned GPO, while a continuous-flow gas system may require power even when the previous storage system did not.
Adding the electrical work to the hot water order provides a defined pathway for arranging the required outlet and associated electrical work rather than discovering the requirement after the new system arrives.
ELECTRICAL SCHEDULING
When Will the Additional Electrical Work Be Completed?
Where this electrical add-on is purchased with a standard like-for-like hot water installation, the additional electrical component may be scheduled separately from the plumbing installation.
Appointment Within 48 Hours
Installed Today's service terms provide for a confirmed electrical installation time from the electrician within 48 hours of the order being processed.
Within 5 Business Days
The additional electrical work is scheduled to be completed within 5 business days of order processing.
Separate Electrical Appointment
The electrical appointment can be separate from the standard hot water plumbing installation.
HOT WATER OPERATION
Will the Hot Water System Still Be Installed While the Power Point Is Pending?
Where the hot water system can be safely installed and made operational without the additional electrical add-on being completed first, the standard hot water installation can proceed separately.
However, some appliances rely on the new power point for normal operation. For example, a plug-in heat pump cannot operate from its new location until a suitable electrical supply is available.
Whether hot water can operate before the electrical appointment depends on the appliance and the existing site. The new power point cannot be treated as optional where it is required for the appliance to function safely.
BEFORE ORDERING
What Should You Check Before Adding This Electrical Service?
- Does the new hot water system use a 10A plug?
- Is a new power point actually required?
- Where will the new hot water system be installed?
- Is the proposed outlet location outdoors?
- How far is the likely electrical cable route?
- Is the switchboard reasonably accessible?
- Is there likely to be space for additional protection?
- Does the appliance manufacturer specify a particular electrical arrangement?
- Will electrical work be required before the appliance can operate?
- Is more than 5m of cabling likely?
